West Virginia at Kansas coverage

Kansas defeats West Virginia, 31-19

  • 11 a.m., Nov. 16, 2013
  • Memorial Stadium, Lawrence, KS

Final: Kansas football 31, West Virginia 19

Kansas University senior running back James Sims devastated West Virginia's defense, and the Jayhawks won their first Big 12 game since Nov. 6, 2010, with a 31-19 victory Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

Sims, a freshman in KU's last conference victory, scored three of the four Kansas touchdowns on a career day, with 211 rushing yards.

KU (3-7 overall, 1-6 Big 12) snapped a six-game losing streak this season and a 27-game losing streak in Big 12 games.

The Jayhawks play at Iowa State next Saturday.

Box score

HOW THEY SCORED

First Quarter

12:08 — Charles Sims 12 pass from Paul Millard. Josh Lambert kick. After receiving the opening kickoff and starting against the wind, the Mountaineers marched down the field in six plays and 2:52 to open up the scoring. Sims accounted for two of the three big plays on the drive and a 30-yard pass from Millard to Mario Alford on the third play of the game set up the score. (WVU 7, KU 0).

7:16 — Ron Doherty 25 field goal. Montell Cozart started the game at quarterback for Kansas and calmly drove the Jayhawks 64 yards in 13 plays to put points on the board. Cozart completed one pass on the drive to Andrew Turzilli on third down and also ran for a first down. A holding penalty on first-and-goal from the 6 put KU in a hole and the Jayhawks settled for three. (WVU 7, KU 3).

Second Quarter

6:12 — James Sims 3 run. Doherty kick. Kansas grabbed its first lead of the day on a five-play, 89-yard drive that took just 1:35 and was the second longest scoring drive of the season. Appropriately, the drive also featured KU's longest run from scrimmage this season, as Sims raced 62 yards down the West Virginia sideline two plays before plowing into the end zone on a great second effort. (KU 10, WVU 7).

0:28 — Sims 68 run. Doherty kick. A couple of possessions after ripping off a 62-yard run that set up a KU score, Sims outdid himself by racing 68 yards to the end zone to put Kansas up by two scores. The Jayhawks took possession with 40 seconds to play in the half and score on the first snap, with Sims out-running everyone to the end zone up the middle. (KU 17, WVU 7).

Third Quarter

10:11 — Sims 2 run. Doherty kick. Ben Goodman's interception and ensuing 54-yard return set up the Jayhawks at the West Virginia 14 yard line and, five plays later Sims plowed in from two yards out for his third touchdown of the day. The drive, which covered 14 yards in five plays and 1:54, was kept alive by a seven-yard scramble on third down by quarterback Montell Cozart, who pump-faked a WVU defender at the 7 to get down to the 2. (KU 24, WVU 7).

Fourth Quarter

6:24 — Brandon Bourbon 1 run. Doherty kick. KU's fourth touchdown run of the day was set up by an interception and 28-yard return by junior linebacker Ben Heeney. When Heeney reached the 5 yard line, he appeared to sniff the goal line and went all out to get into the end zone. He was stopped just short, though, and on the next snap Bourbon rammed in from a yard out. (KU 31, WVU 7).

4:54 — Kevin White 3 pass from Millard. Two-point pass failed. Two pass interference calls in a three-play span on the Kansas defense helped the Mountaineers reach the end zone for the first time since the game's opening drive. West Virginia's drive covered 75 yards in five plays and 1:30. (KU 31, WVU 13).

0:28 — Charles SIms 6 run. Two-point pass failed.

You're right. Today doesn't mean our problems are solved. Today illustrates that, while we're not very good, we're improving.

Peter56321

From your keyboard to God's ear.

Jayhawkinaustin

I know I'm just being a wet blanket, but while the offense certainly looked better today, taking away the two extremely short fields provided by the defense they scored,,, 17 points.

Oklahomajayhawk

Porter Lake called.....it wants its goal posts back! Take them up there guys!

Ian Ballinger

God bless. Rock Chalk. Let's do it again in Ames

Peter56321 in reply to Phil Leister

Gabriel Engeland

Holy crap, rushing the field. I'm not even mad.

Phil Leister in reply to Peter56321

WHO THE F**K CARES!!!!! It could have been the ugliest win of all time. A win is a win for this team

Oklahomajayhawk

Great job guys!!!!!

Alex Berger

WVU could still win if they run back two onside kicks.

Ian Ballinger

CHARLIE DOUSED!

Benton Smith KUsports.com staff

Matthews recovers the onside kick. That just about does it.

Lawkan in reply to Chuck Wagstaff

what is that one up to?

Danr

Bring on the isu clowns

Chuck Wagstaff

Big XII road streak: YOU'RE NEXT!

Peter56321

Even though we're going to win, I'm disappointed with how we ended this game.

Ian Ballinger

Lawkan

Alex Berger in reply to Lajayhawk

Twitter is going crazy with "We Want Bama"

Lajayhawk

Man, that field goal would have been nice right about now.....

Gabriel Engeland

So many injuries today. Please be a cramp.

Lawkan

hope that is a cramp.

Benton Smith KUsports.com staff

Sims was WIDE open there. WVU might put another TD on the board. 0:43 left, and WVU is on the KU 6.

Oklahomajayhawk in reply to Ian Ballinger

One of the sweetest sounds I hear!

Atljaybird

The Rock Chalk Chant never sounded so good

Phil Leister

The Rock Chalk chant at a football game??????? What a great week for the Jayhawks.

Danr

Decent sounding chant

Ian Ballinger

first time in a long time you hear the rock chalk chant in memorial stadium. let it echo

Ian Ballinger

Chuck Wagstaff

Peter56321 in reply to Lajayhawk

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Phil Leister in reply to Lajayhawk

Just saw this pic on facebook. Instant classic

WVU wth the white flag

Ashwin Rao

How much time left in the game?

Saguaro_jayhawk

Bourbon took a tough shot on that one; hard to keep your bearings

Chuck Wagstaff

Forget Coors Light - we need to practice with footballs stored in a glacier.

Houtexhawk

Good thing they missed the two point conversion

Benton Smith KUsports.com staff

Bourbon remains down on the turf after getting hit, losing fumble.

Peter56321 in reply to Phil Leister

No.

Danr

See... That's what I get.

Lawkan in reply to Phil Leister

No

Gabriel Engeland

We fumble a ton

Ian Ballinger

oh you gotta be kidding

Benton Smith KUsports.com staff

Ball popped out as Bourbon got hit. Just when you thought the game was over... I mean, it's still essentially over, right?

Phil Leister

Has Heaps seen a snap? I've only been able to watch the 4th quarter

Chuck Wagstaff

Rool out - pass / run option

Benton Smith KUsports.com staff

KU going Bourbon here. Makes sense. No reason to get Sims injured at this point.

Danr

I'm thinking we might actually hang on to this one now. rock chalk!

Saguaro_jayhawk

Excellent field again by C Embree!

Ian Ballinger in reply to Todd Simpson

great week to be a kansan

Todd Simpson in reply to Ian Ballinger

Lajayhawk

LOL. Delay of game on a 2 point attempt?? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Oklahomajayhawk

Same thing two weeks in a row. They know that #12 will shield the receiver and NOT look back for the ball. He needs to practice with the receivers this week and learn to look back!

Atljaybird

C'mon - let's not get sloppy. Finish this thing!

Saguaro_jayhawk

Good toss, excellent catch on that WVU TD

Chuck Wagstaff

Run the clock out

Armen Kurdian

Settle down D.

Lajayhawk

Wow. That was a hell of a catch.

Houtexhawk in reply to Chijayhawk

I think he was always going to get at least one more year

Gabriel Engeland in reply to Lawkan

WV is FB rich, top 25 historical program. Louisville is....meh.

Benton Smith KUsports.com staff

Couple of PI calls might get WVU in the end zone again, first time since opening drive.

Oklahomajayhawk in reply to Ian Ballinger

lol...I don't know. All I know is that we have to win AND score and that is something we haven't done in a long long while. But who cares! Great day in Jayhawk Nation!

Chijayhawk

This has been a good week for KU Sports

Chuck Wagstaff

Uncatchable

Ian Ballinger in reply to Oklahomajayhawk

is it not a 31% discount? or did they change the way the do it? I haven't had season tix since '09

Lawkan

This is the only time I have been glad we got WVU instead of Louisville.

Colreader

OU 41 ISU 10

Lajayhawk

Over/Under was 48, btw.

Jayhawkboogeyman in reply to Joe Ross

No. Statistically from inside the opponents' 20 you should always go for 4th downs other than a game winning fg. The offensive team is much more likely to score the next points from that position even if they fail to gain on 4th down.

Kevin Woods

KU winning a football game? I need a priest, this is surely a sign of a coming apocalypse.

Oklahomajayhawk

20% Discount at KU Bookstore!!!....lol.

Lawkan in reply to Todd Simpson

I think they are designed so they can collapse them immediately now for safety reasons.

Ian Ballinger in reply to Gabriel Engeland

damn straight

Ian Ballinger in reply to Chijayhawk

he would've anyway.
