Michigan at Kansas coverage

Michigan defeats Kansas, 87-85

  • 6:37 p.m., March 29, 2013
  • Cowboys Stadium, Arlington, TX

FINAL: Michigan rallies from 14-point second-half deficit in 87-85 overtime win over KU

By Matt Tait.

The Kansas University men's basketball team seemed headed to the Elite Eight all night on Friday at Cowboys Stadium.

But then Michigan guard Trey Burke got hot and the Wolverines picked up an improbable, come-from-behind, 87-85, overtime victory over the top-seeded Jayhawks.

Kansas scored its first 20 points in the paint and led by as many as 10 during the first half. However, despite playing most of the way in complete control of the game, the Jayhawks (31-6) never were able to pull away.

KU shot 19-of-28 (67.9 percent) in the first half yet led by just six at the break, thanks to the first-half play of Michigan's Mitch McGary (11) and Nik Stauskas (9). KU held UM stud point guard and potential player-of-the-year, Trey Burke, to no points (0-of-4 shooting), five assists and three turnovers in the first 20 minutes. All of that with starting point guard Elijah Johnson playing just three minutes after picking up three first-half fouls, including a Flagrant 1 on a blow below the belt in the game's opening minutes.

The Wolverines capitalized on their momentum early in the second half, pulling to within two — 46-44 at the 15:48 mark — but KU responded with a 15-6 run to open up a 61-50 lead with 11 minutes to play. McLemore scored 10 points during the stretch and Elijah Johnson and Perry Ellis supported KU's superstar.

KU bumped its largest lead of the game to 14 — 68-54 on a three-pointer from Johnson — with 6:50 left, but Michigan staged a furious rally in the game's final few minutes and sent the game to overtime.

From there, UM (29-7) controlled most of the overtime, where several KU miscues and a last-second three-point miss from Naadir Tharpe on an ill-advised pass from Johnson pushed the Wolverines into the next round.

After missing his first five shots, Ben McLemore broke out of his shooting slump for 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting, but disappeared late. Travis Releford scored 16, Jeff Withey added 12 points and 8 rebounds, Kevin Young added 12 points, and Elijah Johnson finished with 13 points but also five turnovers.

Burke finished with 23 points (all in the second half) and McGary added 25 to lead Michigan.

Friday's loss was the final KU game in the careers of Young, Withey, Releford and Johnson.

Here’s a quick look back at some of Friday night's action:

The game turned when: KU blew a 14-point lead with 6:50 left and a 10-point lead with less than three minutes to play. The biggest blow during that stretch was a missed one-and-one attempt at the free throw line by Elijah Johnson that could've put KU up four or five, but, instead, gave Michigan, and a red-hot Burke, a chance to tie the game in the final seconds.

Offensive highlights: ••• At the 8:48 mark of the first half, Ben McLemore finally knocked in a long-range shot. The three-pointer from the corner put KU up 25-17 and snapped an 0-for-5 start to the game for the red-shirt freshman. ••• With KU leading 51-46 in the second half and Michigan point guard Trey Burke heating up, the Jayhawks benefited from back-to-back Burke miscues to open up a 10-point lead. The first came at the 13:53 mark, when Burke drove the lane, had the ball poked away and saw Ben McLemore race out for the hammer dunk. On the next possession, a Burke miss led to a transition layup and foul by Elijah Johnson, who hit the free throw to put Kansas ahead 56-46. ••• With KU leading 70-62, Elijah Johnson broke down the defense and dished to Kevin Young down low. Young quickly flipped the ball to Withey for the uncontested, monster slam and KU went up 72-62 with 2:52 to play. •••

Defensive highlights: ••• At the 18:15 mark of the first half, Ben McLemore swatted a layup attempt by Glenn Robinson III in transition. It looked as if Robinson had a clear path to the bucket when he caught the pass from Trey Burke, but McLemore skied to erase the shot. ••• With just under 10 minutes to play in the first half, KU reserve Jamari Traylor pinned a shot by Michigan's Jordan Morgan to the glass, further flexing KU's muscles inside.

Key stat: Points in the paint. No question. All week, the talk was about KU's strength inside against Michigan's strength on the perimeter. After scoring its first 20 points of the game in the paint, KU finished with 60 points in the paint, good for 70.5 percent of its total. Michigan, meanwhile, scored 40 down low.

Up next: The loss ended the Jayhawks' season at 31-6. Michigan advanced to play the winner of tonight's Florida-Florida Gulf Coast match-up.

Too bad one of the non-returning players didn't take the last shot.

phogdawg 7 years, 1 month ago

E Johnson- worst senior KU guard ever. 1st half on bench Ku rocks. 2nd half-five frosh style mistakes. KU all time leader in sloppy passes ans forced shots. All American choker!!!!

John White 7 years, 1 month ago

They were even great in the early parts of the 2nd half, when EJ was still on the bench. I just don't understand how Self doesn't see that.

Michael Bratisax 7 years, 1 month ago

EJ wasn't a PG to begin with and although I think he most likely ended our season, HCBS should have had Rio Adams backing up Tharpe since midway through the conference schedule.

Clearly EJ didn't have either the physical or the mental abilities to handle the position. You just can't stick a round pole into a square hole. The position that we needed filled more than any other was the PG and HCBS couldn't recruit a freshman PG who could play the position from the get go.

No use crying about it now, maybe we can pick up one of the several top 20 PGs transferring from Kentucky if any beside to leave.

This was one game albeit a very important one and HCBS could not make the necessary game changes in the second half. If anything, he let loyalty cloud his judgment.

90sHawk 7 years, 1 month ago

If anything, I'd agree with the loyalty comment.

EJ, don't let the bastards drag you down. You're a good kid, and a good person. A lot of your comments have been extremely insightful, and I know you'll go on to do good things. I'll miss you, and Jeff, Travis, Kevin and Ben. Thanks for some great games, and great quotes. Rock chalk man.

jaycon11 7 years, 1 month ago

where are all the jesse bashers who were so vocal when he predicted a michigan win?

Brian Conrad 7 years, 1 month ago

so you watched the game and said wow he was right on ... when KU was up 14 ... one foul shot and KU advances

jaycon11 7 years, 1 month ago

so you saw the final 10 minutes and thought, jesse is so full of it.

Bill Skeet 7 years, 1 month ago

Cmon. I think you have to admit the end of the game was pretty unfathomable with 10 min left.

jaycon11 7 years, 1 month ago

with 10 minutes left in regulation? absolutely. but the final 5 was a trend that showed no ability to slow or reverse. and college b-ball is a 40 minute game. you should youtube illinois' amazing 16-point (or so) comeback vs arizona in the final few minutes of the tournament abt 10 yrs ago. takehome point: no lead is safe with 3 lights out perimeter shooters on the other team. ever.

Brian Conrad 7 years, 1 month ago

10 minutes you fool with 1 minute left hit one free throw KU wins... KU won 37 minutes and gave away last 3... if you really beleive u of M better you watched another game... mistakes only reason for loss NOT MICHIGAN

Brian Conrad 7 years, 1 month ago

jaycon 10 minutes??????? we were up 10 points with 2 minutes left how about we win 38 minutes .. we gave away 2 you friggin way someone predicts that .. they did not beat us .. we beat us..

jaycon11 7 years, 1 month ago

i'm sure their defense in the final 5 minutes had nothing to do with it. right.

jaycon11 7 years, 1 month ago

1 minute "you fool" with 5 minutes in regulation, if ku doesn't go ice cold from 3 feet out and layups, with zero--ZERO--offensive rebounds after easy misses, a missed free throw is inconsequential. there is no acceptable reason that ku lost a 10 point lead in the last 5 minutes that does not also include easy missed shots in the paint with no weak side defensive help on rebounds. none. go watch the replay, or look at the game flow at statsheet tomorrow and see that the offense missed easy scoring opportunities in droves while ej was on the bench.

Brodieman1982 7 years, 1 month ago

It's funny. How many times have we Jayhawk fans been so fortunate when other teams miss free throws. We would have two less wins this year, one less conference title and one less national title. The basketball gods decide to swing the other way on us.

90sHawk 7 years, 1 month ago

Ej's bonehead turnovers and decisions down the stretch, and Bill's stubbornness leaving him in while it's happening. The cause is obvious

jaycon11 7 years, 1 month ago

ej was a big reason, but not the only one. look at the replay and see the numerous 1-and-outs in the final 5 minutes, esp the 3-foot shots in the paint.

90sHawk 7 years, 1 month ago

The loss is on EJ and 3 quick turnovers .. quit trying to justify the loss through other means.

jaycon11 7 years, 1 month ago

re-watch the final 5-6 minutes of regulation. how many 1-and-outs do you count? answer: more than ej's turnover total. not saying ej cratered, and sunk our chances, but waaaaay too many misses on easy baskets and zero offensive rebounding in the final stretch.

90sHawk 7 years, 1 month ago

I point to 1` player who single handedly turned it over which led UM to force OT. You point to a collection of instances to make your case. You lose. EJ gave this game away, despite the other (minor) issues the last couple minutes

jaycon11 7 years, 1 month ago

if ku makes 1 more 3-foot shot, or bunny in the final five minutes, ej's turnovers or missed 1-1 isn't an issue. and as with ej's bone-headed plays, any of those missed shots is the difference in such a close finish

90sHawk 7 years, 1 month ago

You're seriously going to point out that any random extra made bucket would have completely negated EJ's play the last 4 minutes? That's bailing him out and sounds ridiculous. That's the what-if game; how about playing the reality game and how we all saw him play at the end. Again, I love the guy and will miss him, but this game is on his shoulders, almost entirely but not quite

jaycon11 7 years, 1 month ago

i refer to my original reply to this sub-thread: "ej was a big reason, but not the only one." if you want to build strawmen, then you should farm out your expertise wheat growers in the western counties where the wheat grows by the mile and crows are a nuisance.

Mike Skiles 7 years, 1 month ago

You sir are pathetic. If not for your ID, I'd swear you are a K-State fan or maybe from Mizzou. You FAIL!

jayhawkinATL 7 years, 1 month ago

They are making fun of EJ for that last play and deservedly so.

DanR 7 years, 1 month ago

Stupidest thing I've ever witnessed

squawkhawk 7 years, 1 month ago

Don't be so hard on him, he did his best. The better team just won tonight.

Brian Conrad 7 years, 1 month ago

the better team did not win ... what a stupid comment.. the team that made huge mistakes lost.

Darshana Benhur 7 years, 1 month ago

Cant believe that just happened up by 14 and lost in the end. we lost 3 times in the state of Texas this yr. Got beat by TCU, Blowout by Baylor and now this.

Brodieman1982 7 years, 1 month ago

Twice in the Dallas area. Not the best place for the 'Hawks this year.

Paul Christiansen 7 years, 1 month ago

Our bad passing finally caught up with us.

kennethst 7 years, 1 month ago

Will be remembered as one of the worst losses in Kansas history. Actually......I don't think KU lost.....I think EJ lost it. I like the kid......but kid.....it's time to go.

Mike Skiles 7 years, 1 month ago

You sir, are truly pathetic. Quit dumping on a kid who gave his all to this university. You sure have forgotten last season, haven't you? I think its....time for YOU to go!

Steve Jacob 7 years, 1 month ago

The shocking stat is Michigan out rebounding KU, and KU only getting 7 offensive rebounds. Michigan got killed all season in the Big 10 in those stats.

John White 7 years, 1 month ago

It was the worst down the stretch too. Over the last 5 minutes of regulation and in OT, Michigan completely dominated the boards. Get even one of those defensive rebounds down the stretch and they probably win.

Justin Lindsley 7 years, 1 month ago

That was the shocker. Everyone knew their guards are great. It was the inside game that won it for them. I bet if you asked their coach that is what he would say.

Stacy Taylor 7 years, 1 month ago

Any idea why EJ didn't just take it all the way in?!?! WTH???

jayhawkinATL 7 years, 1 month ago

Saying the only thing that makes sense is that he over-drove and ended up underneath the basket.

Brian Conrad 7 years, 1 month ago

Whitey was right under goal for dunk... he throws it out crazy he can not add .. he thought we were down 3.... BONEHEAD

Stacy Taylor 7 years, 1 month ago

Travis even said it was drawn up for the 2...I heard Self's reasoning - that he drove too far - but damn, he should know better.

Justin Lindsley 7 years, 1 month ago

Who cares about the last play. It should have never come to that

AirCapJay 7 years, 1 month ago

Withey was wide open under the basket to receive a pass from EJ and he throws to Na. Withey could have tied the game, maybe draw the foul too.

Brian Conrad 7 years, 1 month ago

EJ 10 second count ... then misses front end of one and one .. Withey open uder goal for final shot.. crazy pass at end of game .. the punch for flagrant... VERY BAD WAY TO GO OUT. have been behind EJ through thick and thin BUT WTF !!!!! EJ was HORRIBLE !
BONEHEAD IS RIGHT BONEHEAD !!!!!1

Bill Skeet 7 years, 1 month ago

I think he missed the back end of it.. hit 3 of 4 free throws. I think he's like a 78% free throw shooter.. That's just the way it goes.

But KU should have never been in that position. That's why you can't lay this at EJ's feet, alone.

Mike Skiles 7 years, 1 month ago

Agree totally. The idiots on this message thread seem to think EJ lost the game by himself. There was much more going on out there than EJ, not the least of which was a saavy Michigan team in the last 10 minutes. Everyone who says EJ lost the game is an IDIOT!

Brian Conrad 7 years, 1 month ago

EJ killed us starting with the cheap shot fist to the groin flagrant foul. !! pathetic way for a KU player to ever play ! if EJ had not played last 2 minutes .. we win.. he made crucial mistakes .. up 10 with 2 left .. well only way to lose is to make huge mistakes.. crazy people keep talking about last 10 minutes WE WERE UP 10 WITH 2 MINUTES LEFT all those who offer up idiot please rewind and watch .. front end would have sealed the game .. 10 second count crazy.. 3 turnovers in 2 minutes.. but he was just a little part of reason we lost .. PUKE

90sHawk 7 years, 1 month ago

A savvy Michigan team THE LAST 10 MINUTES? Haha, this game was well in hand until the 2:22 mark when EJ committed his first of 3 turnovers in 4 straight possessions. 10 minutes of savvy play? Hardly

Brian Conrad 7 years, 1 month ago

ollerfarm 7 years, 1 month ago

I'm happy to see E Johnson joining the ranks of T Taylor, never to lose another game for KU with their boneheaded playing and turnovers. What was that last play of the game, and at the close of the 1st half. We haven't been able to close a period with a good play in 75% or more of the games. Lots of luck in the future to you E Johnson, glad you're gone.

Rock Chalk 7 years, 1 month ago

Hey Tyshawn played his heart out for us. I don't think you can lump them together.

John White 7 years, 1 month ago

EJ played his heart out, he just didn't use his head ever.

Mike Gammill 7 years, 1 month ago

Can anyone say "Chokehawk"? Another NCAA disappointment for KU. Now, we'll see what the fallout is during the off season, several seniors done, and McLemore's fate.

Next year could be quite interesting.

90sHawk 7 years, 1 month ago

McLemore is gone. And he should go. No reason to stick around with the green team we'll have next year. Go and making his money

AirCapJay 7 years, 1 month ago

I don't think Ben scored a point in the second half. Did he?

GreatJake 7 years, 1 month ago

like 20 points in 2 half according to tv but zero in OT

90sHawk 7 years, 1 month ago

10 pts that I count. Which is why its astonishing Bill sits him right after he had it going again. Why sit Ben after 20 pts in 15-18 min? To cool him off ?!!!

VaJay 7 years, 1 month ago

I think your mom wants you to go to bed gammi.

Pitthawk34 7 years, 1 month ago

Thank god this team is done...when you habe r seniors starting at KS means thay cant close games. They deserve to lose with the pathetic coaching. The worest last 3minutes coaching I have ever seen.

Jabez Harlan 7 years, 1 month ago

I would not go that far. Just needed to take EJ out of the game. thats all

John White 7 years, 1 month ago

When a decision seems that obvious to everyone but you, you fail to make it, and it costs you the game, it overrides just about every coaching positive.

Not to mention he never adjusted the defense on Burke down the stretch and just let him kill them.

bwag 7 years, 1 month ago

You didn't see the K-State game. The error was having the ball in EJ's hand in the 2nd half. Should have transitioned him to 2 guard rotation 2 months ago and gone with Tharpe at point.

Jack Wilson 7 years, 1 month ago

Yea, I watched that ISU game in Ames and Self was a fool to put the ball in EJ's hands.

Rock Chalk 7 years, 1 month ago

This hurts. Now what do we do? Suffer through all of the post-game analysis. I'm gong to have to sit that out.

jayhawkinATL 7 years, 1 month ago

FGCU has "Dunk City" and we're left with "CHOKE CITY".

fansincewilt 7 years, 1 month ago

How many turnovers did EJ have in this game? It is really too bad that he played so poorly in his last game as a Jayhawk. I wish them all well in their future. Michigan is a really good team and one that could beat us again. Their coach waited to put pressure on us at about the four or five minute mark. That was a really smart move. Self had no answer to the pressure. We suffered from pressure all year long and really never resolved that issue. Johnson folded game after game when the pressure came. We really don't have an excuse for not being able to handle pressure by this time.

John White 7 years, 1 month ago

5 turnovers and 0 assists. Sums up his season pretty much. That's what happens when you have a SG trying to play PG.

Cody Riedy 7 years, 1 month ago

I think fans usually are way to reactionary about changing schemes, changing players, etc, but it's really hard to understand why the ball was in EJ's hands vs Tharpe's late in the game. I guess Self was hoping we'd eke it out and EJ's ego would be saved and he'd recover the next game.

Rock Chalk 7 years, 1 month ago

This hurts. Now what do we do? Suffer through all of the post-game analysis. I'm going to have to sit that out.

Jeff, Travis and Kevin deserved a better end to their college career.

kennethst 7 years, 1 month ago

Well, boys. It's over. I'm sad. I cant remember a a Bill Self team giving up a 14 point lead. Never.

90sHawk 7 years, 1 month ago

Maybe Steve Kerr was right, EJ's dirty foul was karma ... should have sat his a$$ the rest of the game ... nope, Bill loyal to seniors despite how they play, but wont hesitate to sit a freshman superstar who struggles just a little

Thank you for the pain.

Dave Benjamin 7 years, 1 month ago

Ironically he punched us all in the nuts in the end.

jaycon11 7 years, 1 month ago

love this team to the end, but it was never a final four team, unless the team was capable of playing at full potential. and that occured more often than not during the regular season, but not at a sustained level necessary for advancing in the tournament. in 2 years, this team ought to have a squad capable of knocking on that door. we'll see what frankamp, selden and greene bring.

Jabez Harlan 7 years, 1 month ago

Please tell me you are not over this that quick

jaycon11 7 years, 1 month ago

yes i am. i anticipated a loss tonight since the end of the last game. baseball season begins now.

Dave Cook 7 years, 1 month ago

totally with you jayconn1.. I'm fine with the loss, not gonna dump on the team nor EJ.. it is what it is... baseball starts sunday night!! Time for my blood pressure to start returning to normal! lol

90sHawk 7 years, 1 month ago

"I'm fine with the loss" ....... well I'll tell ya, true KU fans aren't fine with it. While I won't sit around and pout all weekend, I certainly am disappointed and far from "fine". Sounds like a loser's mentality

Rock Chalk 7 years, 1 month ago

"... well I'll tell ya, true KU fans aren't fine with it."

No kidding. How you can "be fine with the loss" is beyond me.

jaycon11 7 years, 1 month ago

if you build up unreasonable expectations beforehand, then i can understand your dilemma.

jaycon11 7 years, 1 month ago

dear 90s hawk,

i've been a "true ku" b-ball fan probably since you parents were pre-pubescent, so don't cop that attitude 'round here.

90sHawk 7 years, 1 month ago

Sure you are. B/c you're over this loss immediately after the game since you didn't "build up unreasonable expectations"? I'd venture to guess you expected nothing from this team. That doesn't apply to me, so back the ruck up. I don't set FF or NC expectations going into a season or during it,. I just sit back and enjoy the games and the ride. But it's disappointing to sit here and watch a team blow up the last 2 minutes with a senior leading the charge. And you said you anticipated this loss after the end of the last game; well then, I'm going to call you out as not being a true fan then, b/c we looked good the 2nd half against UNC with nothing that showed us we should have anticipated this loss. You should just go away now.

Brian Conrad 7 years, 1 month ago

jaycon you are idiot... 1 free throw away from win... Florida does not look tough.. NCAA much smarter than you.. we were #1 seed and 2 overall by people MUCH smarter than you... EJ just chocked at the end...

Mike Skiles 7 years, 1 month ago

Time for you to go to bed child. Let the adults talk now.

Jabez Harlan 7 years, 1 month ago

Elijah hit me in the nuts over and over again towards the end of the game.

Now I know how McGary feels

90sHawk 7 years, 1 month ago

I still love EJ to death, and the rest of the seniors as well. Still doesnt mean i dont blame him for the loss though

Jabez Harlan 7 years, 1 month ago

Yeah I feel bad for all of the seniors except for EJ

kennethst 7 years, 1 month ago

That's how I feel. He blew it......but he gave is all.

kennethst 7 years, 1 month ago

I'm glad we have this place to vent......that's for sure.

My keyboard is taking punishment. But it's a good outlet.

Bryan Mille 7 years, 1 month ago

Couple of points fellas,

1) great overall season for the Hawks

2) Michigan (Burke) got lucky with 30 footer

3) when we are up 9 or so with 5 minutes to play when are we gonna stop using clock and just play basketball. I'm tired of seeing us give up big leads because we think we have the game won.

AirCapJay 7 years, 1 month ago

Actually, we did not use clock. EJ kept shooting with 20 seconds left.

Brian Conrad 7 years, 1 month ago

we were up 10 with 2 minutes left YES TIME TO BURN CLOCK !!!!

Hank Cross 7 years, 1 month ago

Thank you Travis! Thank you Jeff, Kevin, and BMac. EJ - seeing you playing pick up games in the park.

fansincewilt 7 years, 1 month ago

Best wishes to our seniors and to McLemore. I hope they do well at the next level. I feel someone should give Releford a shot. He is one tough kid. I felt he was the toughest on our team. We will be fine next year. We have some early season losses but I think we will be really good by the end of the year. Ellis is proving himself to be really good. Maybe we should have played him more tonight. I'm not sure what we should have done differently tonight. We just lost. Turnovers and rebounding hurt us. We are a better team but we just didn't win the game. We really needed a point guard tonight. Tharpe didn't do well either. It is really sad to have a game won to only see it taken away by boneheaded plays down the stretch. I would rather get beat by twenty and be way over matched.

Jim Roth 7 years, 1 month ago

Tharpe had 7 assists and 2 turnovers. He did fine.

John White 7 years, 1 month ago

Sure beats the 0 assists and 5 turnovers EJ put up!

MrPilot 7 years, 1 month ago

No matter what, we had a fantastic season. Thank you Seniors for a wonderful ride and for giving your all to this school for 4 years. The best of luck to you in the rest of your lives.

Thank you Ben McLemore for your gravity-defying dunks and your icy-smooth threes. Enjoy the fruits of your talents as (hopefully) the #1 draft pick.

Also, thank you to the rest of the team, and let's give 'em hell next year and bring home conference title #10 in a row!

History. Tradition. Glory.

Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

90sHawk 7 years, 1 month ago

Hope Tharpe takes a big jump next year, or we have yet another yr with no PG.

Al Martin 7 years, 1 month ago

Well heck, we lost the same way we played most of the year. It stinks, but you can't really say it was shocking.

Darin Bradley 7 years, 1 month ago

Watching Kansas Press Conference on CBS Sports and Self is his doing his typical shine job. Will never know why he left EJ in the game.

Michael Bratisax 7 years, 1 month ago

EJ has worked hard for 4 years to reach this spot. He had a front end of a 1 and 1 free-throw to get Kansas into the next round and he misses it..

Pitthawk34 7 years, 1 month ago

BS had better start recruiting better. There is no excuse to lose tis game o excuse at efffi al

Brian Conrad 7 years, 1 month ago

dumb comment we have top 3 class coming in almost always in top 10 bad year rop 20 heck B Mac year was considered bad... recruiting is not problem.. Self knows how to build a team .. we just had tough deal with EJ so up and mostly down... just bad decision making but heck of athlete

jhawkjjm 7 years, 1 month ago

I won't pile on EJ... Because right now I want to forget that he handed Michigan the game with his stupid ass plays down the stretch.

lurkerhawk 7 years, 1 month ago

I'm ashamed at all of these comments deriding EJ. You guys are pathetic.

John White 7 years, 1 month ago

I will give you this: more of those comments should be directed at Self. EJ doesn't make these bad plays if Self doesn't keep putting him in the position to.

pepper_bar 7 years, 1 month ago

EJ punched an opponent in the testicles. He deserves every bit of grief he gets.

John White 7 years, 1 month ago

+1 to this. I do wish there was more grief directed at him for the nutshot than the poor play, which is just embarrassing to the team.

Hurts to Lose, But I can't stay Mad. EJ will remember this last play as a Jayhawk and he doesn't need us trashing him for it and EJ alone did not cost us a 14 point lead. Rock Chalk Guys. More than anything, I'm a Jayhawk forever. And if I can stick with the football team through the last two season, I can stick with these guys!

I feel really bad for Withey, Young, Releford, & BMac - they played great & deserved to continue playing on Sunday, EJ - eh not so much.

I have never disliked a KU player since I started paying attention in the 80s, but just after the game, in a deep depression, I thought "at least I won't have to watch Elijah play again" and I felt much better.

Who punches a guy there? Come on! And then those turnovers... I want to know what was going through his head. What was wrong with you, son?

Cody Riedy 7 years, 1 month ago

Giving up a lead I guess is technically choking, but outside of Elijah's erratic play, I didn't get the sense that KU players "choked" as in couldn't handle the game psychologically. Burke made 30 foot threes and we didn't get some close shots to drop, but it didn't look like our guys played scared.

Darin Bradley 7 years, 1 month ago

Bill will not own up that EJ in the game at the end was a mistake

Brian Jahelka 7 years, 1 month ago

My 7 year old (girl) has been bawling inconsolably for the last 10 minutes... I've been getting her in to Jayhawk BB this year as much as she is willing to watch, but this game she really got in to for some reason. I understand the tears, if they were from me, but not her. I guess she sensed my passion for the game and wanted to learn and watched the whole game with me. She was actually recognizing the KU players and their names. And it then occurred to me how sad I am that I don't get to see Travis, Jeff, Kevin, and Elijah play for KU again when she said she wanted to go to see them play (in person) next year. Those guys have given their ALL for KU, and I'm so thankful to have been able to watch them grow into their roles.

THANK YOU SENIORS for all the hard work you put in. I know its an insane amount. And you have my full respect and admiration. Now, go be successful in LIFE!

RCJH.

lurkerhawk 7 years, 1 month ago

She's in good hands. I still recall my tears as a 7 year old from the 97 Sweet 16 loss.

kennethst 7 years, 1 month ago

My 3 year old watched too. It was hard but I kept my emotions in check......I wont ever show that in front of her. The poor little angel is sad and petting her stuffed BabyJayhawk......but she's ok. And will be over it soon. All I had to say was Easter bunny and she laughed......so did I.....

Jace FitzGibbon 7 years, 1 month ago

love the jayhawks and im thankful for all that elijah gave us but you have to blame him and self for this.

Blame self: Kansas played the best with elijah on the bench in the first half. he benched ben (our best player who was terrible for the unc game) but wont bench ej when we're playing better without him? then he doesnt take him out after that first panic turnover?

blame elijah: when we need to just dribble the clock down at worst, he dribbles into two guys on the block then tries to throw to midcourt. then gets a 10 second the next possession. misses the free throw to literally put the game out of reach. then turns it over with 50 seconds left to let michigan go up 5. then has an open layup to send it to OT with the momentum and throws a terrible pass to naadir.

if we were going to shoot a 3, why wouldnt we design a play for ben who was shooting the best? just baffles me. michigan will steam roll whoever they play. damnit elijah

kennethst 7 years, 1 month ago

Well ....that was awful.......but we'll be ok. It is a game. But this really hurts.

Just take it easy tonight, folks. Be careful. Don't take out your anger on anyone. It isn't their fault. Just stay here and vent.

I'm hurting.......but then I think about my little 3 year old having her Easter egg hunt Sunday.....and it puts it all in perspective.

estaboy 7 years, 1 month ago

Oh we'll, tomorrow is another day... If anything this game shows us how lucky we are to be Americans if this game is our biggest gripe these days. Thank you seniors. Rock chalk jayhawk and America!

razorhawk 7 years, 1 month ago

Thank you Jayhawks.Sorry it ended too soon, but..hell of a year. Good luck to Jeff, Travis, Kevin, EJ and BMac.

chancevandal1 7 years, 1 month ago

No jayhawk should ever be allowed back in the in the game after what EJ did to mcgary. ridiculous. Passes selby as my worst favorite ever. Not for all the to's and ineptitude but for the punch to the groin

Darshana Benhur 7 years, 1 month ago

I dont think Coach self is a good of a coach as people think he is. I also think people should stop bashing on EJ. Its not his fault that his coach made him play the PG position. Naadir should have played PG the whole season bc hes a true PG. EJ should have come off the bench behind Ben and played backup PG. Coach self hurt EJs draft stock in the end realistically

Jim Roth 7 years, 1 month ago

EJ thinks he is a point guard, though.

texashawk10 7 years, 1 month ago

So we should give EJ a pass for hitting another player in the nuts? Should we give him a pass for not having any clue about clock awareness that caused the 10 second violation? Should we give him a pass for not being aware of the score and passing up an open game tying layup to make Naadir basically have to hit the same shot Burke did to tie the game in the first place? EJ is a man and he needs to man up and take the lumps he's getting ready to take from everybody about tonight's game because he made some very stupid decisions tonight.

Rock Chalk 7 years, 1 month ago

As much as we hurt, you know Elijah hurts more. He has to live with that. That'd be tough.

Ethan Berger 7 years, 1 month ago

First of all, its good to see the cowards who are only on these boards after loses back tonight. EJ played his heart out for four years, and you guys bash him like he committed a major crime against you. Pathetic

Second, we have to give a lot of credit to Belin and Burke. Those two TOs by EJ that took it from 10 to 6 were huge. But with 8 seconds left, Burke sends off a shot 10 ft passed the three point. In almost every single game you ever watch, that is the shot you want the other team to take. But he drained it. They had a brilliant game plan that we beat for 38 minutes. Using McGary like that and hoping Burke would get hot. It worked.

Honestly I'm not angry because they needed luck and got it. You can't control luck, it just happens. But two things bothered me

No passing to B Mac in the final few minutes and having KY in instead of Perry in the last few minutes when they were down big. Perry was abusing their low post. But, it seemed like fate for them. Our first 3 point of OT rims in and out, then that last play. I looked like because Morgan was right there affected his decision. But they kid have 4 years of his life to us. He was the one on the court, not us. If you think it hurts for you, imagine how he feels and have some grace.

chancevandal1 7 years, 1 month ago

punching another player in the groin wearing a jayhawk uniform is a major crime

Ethan Berger 7 years, 1 month ago

yes, horrible move. But come on is that the best you have? How many times has he done that before?

Ethan Berger 7 years, 1 month ago

not enough for me to throw him into a fire. Maybe you never played sports, but it happened all the time. The guys with the reputation for it suck, but they guys who hardly ever did it were no worry. Heck everyone did it.

John White 7 years, 1 month ago

It would be one thing (still terrible) if this was the result of some fight they had earlier or whatever, but it was completely out of the blue and right at the beginning of the game. It was a horrible and dirty play, one that he didn't even have a justification for.

90sHawk 7 years, 1 month ago

Trust me, I wouldn't. I played college ball. Sometimes frustration gets the best of people, sometimes good people understand how to handle frustration. EJ's flagrant was uncalled for; it was early, on McGary which wasn't his guy, and we saw nothing that dictated retaliation for anything.

pepper_bar 7 years, 1 month ago

Watching Hawk90 vigorously defend EJ for his unmanly cheap shot is bringing me joy.

chancevandal1 7 years, 1 month ago

losing is one thing...off night...crazy threes or simply outplayed...a cheap shotter should not be put back in the game. that is not kansas basketball and he is not bigger than that. did he play to win last years tourney...did he keep the awesome conference streak alive with 39 at iowast.... yea...but come on national tv intentional punch.... he should be out of the game....

GreatJake 7 years, 1 month ago

I agree with your comment about Perry.

Withey seemed really tired to me due to the missed shots and not moving to rebounds.

I thought Perry should have been in the game as Young is not as physical as Perry ....but just as I thought that Young scores a basket

RCJHKU! Great season but it ended too soon.

John White 7 years, 1 month ago

The one positive that comes out of this: I can now enjoy watching Florida Gulf Coast and rooting for them to make the Final Four.

Jack Wilson 7 years, 1 month ago

Sorry, but your night will be a total loss.

John White 7 years, 1 month ago

I don't know, they're looking pretty good so far.

Robert Lofthouse 7 years, 1 month ago

Nobody plays perfectly, so ya gotta give credit to the eight players on the floor. They didn't give up and they got outplayed by the POY, losing by only 2 in OT, with two chances to win it at the buzzer. It was a tense game. Fun to watch KU basketball! All the best to the departing players. Take a breather, then time to reload.

Pitthawk34 7 years, 1 month ago

The worst overall team in ks history ovef last 10 years...enough said.,,,This is on BS and EJ. Thanks EJ for making a EFFin FF

Ethan Berger 7 years, 1 month ago

I have never seen you on a board after a win, and always see you after a loss. You are a pathetic excuse for a KU fan.

rawheadrex 7 years, 1 month ago

You bellyachers! The team led by 14. EJ did not screw that lead by himself. No one on the team will blame him for the loss. They are a team which is more than I can write about some of these so-called fans.
Thank you Coach Self and your team for a great year!

Jace FitzGibbon 7 years, 1 month ago

yes he did. 3 TOs in a row leading to 6 points. let them back in it. then missed free throws that would have put it away. then turns it over with 50 seconds down by 3 in the OT, then passes up an open layup for a terrible 3

ollerfarm 7 years, 1 month ago

I've been pulling for the Jayhawks sine 1949, If I'm here this fall I'll be pulling again. Right now I can celebrate because E Johnson is gone, he'll not get to do this flop again.

Jack Wilson 7 years, 1 month ago

A few things -- I'm returning from my one week self-imposed exile after picking UNC to beat KU last weekend:

1] EJ put this team on his back for stretches in last year's tournament and no way that reach with the championship game without his big efforts. Just remember that.

2] This loss is nothing like UNI or VCU. We lost to a very comparable team with great character, good shooters, and NBA talent. And we're still had three more wins to go to get a title. The VCU loss cost us a title. This cost us a 50-50 match-up vs. Florida.

3] Our inconsistencies this season .. more particularly our challenges offensively .. made this inevitable. Who really thought this was a national title team? That's not a slam on this team. They could have won it all I guess, but this team just didn't have "it." Never had "it." Hard to quantify, but you know "it" when you see "it."

4] To me, we looked tired. Michigan looked better conditioned. EJ was bent over. Withey had lost his bounce.

5] The worst part -- 7 more months until the next game. It should be a lot of fun, with tempered expectations. A new starting 5. Prediction game 1. Tharpe 2. Selden 3. White 4. Ellis 5. Embiid. At least I'm thinking Embiid now.

This sucks.

jaycon11 7 years, 1 month ago

my gripe:

this doesn't suck. this was expected. having to wait 6 months and a week or two until late night 2013 sucks. and i'll be nearly a year older. but i'm more optimistic abt next years squad right now than i was this time last year at our potential for this season. and that does not suck. at all.

Brian Stoops 7 years, 1 month ago

I enjoy your posts, HEM but a self imposed one week ban from posting........don't take yourself so seriously :)

DanR 7 years, 1 month ago

If EJ was bent over from sitting on the bench the entire first half, then Hudy is way over-rated.

I'd like to know why Withey wasn't in the game after EJ made those free throws. They scored an easy layup while he was chilling on the bench then. Horrible coaching decision there.

Mike Skiles 7 years, 1 month ago

Wow....as a life long Jayhawk, I'm really bummed out and sad. Not about the loss, the kids played their hearts out. I'm proud of this team. You can't win the national championshhip every year. No, I"m sad at the cowards on this message thread who are blaming specific individuals and plays for the loss - yeah, cowards. You sit behind your keyboards and complain about the coach, complain about specific players, and you call yourself a fan. No you're not, you jump on board a winning wagon, then fall off just as quickly if things don't follow an idealized script. Pathethic. Don't make excuses for your criticism being constructive, there are many of the posts above that are sick, which makes you the same. I'm proud of our seniors, and have immensely enjoyed watching them the past 4 years (or more), good job kids and best of luck to you in the NBA. RCJH!

pepper_bar 7 years, 1 month ago

Disappointing that so many posters here are defending a dude who, while wearing a Kansas uniform, punched an opponent in the junk. Indefensible.

Jace FitzGibbon 7 years, 1 month ago

anyone saying "they're just kids", no they're young adults and Elijah is going to try to play in the NBA in a couple of months. Hes a big boy that should handle criticism which he deserves after blowing the game tonight.

rockchalkjh16 7 years, 1 month ago

He dropped the ball in the final seconds, but the TEAM dropped the ball in the second half.

Ethan Berger 7 years, 1 month ago

yes, it is okay for people to say a player played poorly. It is not okay to state how happy you are that he is leaving (not saying you said that).

rockchalkjh16 7 years, 1 month ago

Seniors, REALLY going to miss you!! Chin up, you have Jayhawk fans for life.

Mark Boline 7 years, 1 month ago

Well, I hardly know what to say. I was going to start off by saying we don't resent EJ the person, just the ludicrously stupid plays that cost the game. But then, there is the bunch to the groin. You can't complain about the missed free throw because that happens (and won KU a national championship not so long ago). But the stupid turnovers and the ill-advised shots bring out a lot of vitriol, naturally.

I rationalize that KU couldn't have won the national championship this year anyway, as long as Johnson was in the lineup. And that it is only a basketball game.

John White 7 years, 1 month ago

I didn't resent EJ the person, until he punched a guy in the nuts for no reason to start the game. That is a mark against him as a person, not just his decision making as a player.

colreader 7 years, 1 month ago

Charles Barkley just said our last play was "terrrrribull".

texashawk10 7 years, 1 month ago

Everybody who said Elijah Johnson would carry KU this tournament was right. He carried KU to a loss tonight with his mind boggling stupidity in regards to passing at the end of regulation. All the credit in the world should go to Trey Burke for his performance in the second half, but his performance would've been soon forgotten if EJ hadn't actually thrown the game away tonight. This one leaves a pretty bad taste in my mouth because it was one guy who lost the game for KU. I don't usually like to be that guy, but if EJ had used any court awareness or common sense tonight, KU has two teams playing on Sunday instead of just the women.

90sHawk 7 years, 1 month ago

3:29 60-70 Elijah Johnson Turnover. 2:22 62-72 Elijah Johnson Turnover. 2:02 64-72 Elijah Johnson Turnover. 0:13 73-76 Elijah Johnson missed Free Throw.

I'm sure EJ feels horrible for this. I can't blame the guy for a turnover, or a missed 1 and 1. But dang, this is a really bad sequence of events that led to our demise tonight

texashawk10 7 years, 1 month ago

The two things that really got under my skin the most were the 10 second count because a senior PG should NEVER have that happen, especially when you still have timeouts left. That lack of awareness has been my biggest issue with EJ his entire career and I've mentioned off and on over the past 2 years and it bit KU hard tonight. The second one I think is directly related to EJ's lack of awareness and it was passing up the open layup down 2 and making a bad pass and forcing Naadir to take a very tough 3 to win it. Based off of his body of work, I seriously doubt EJ even knew KU was down 2 instead of 3 because that has to be the only explanation as to why EJ made that play.

90sHawk 7 years, 1 month ago

Yeah, the 10 sec call was mind boggling. That and driving the lane with almost a full shot clock and throwing it wildly back out only to be stolen by Robinson for an easy lay in. That stuff just can't happen over and over when you're a senior. Hate piling on the guy, since he isn't THE reason we lost, just mostly his fault in my opinion. Gotta throw Self in there too and sprinkle the rest to a few other guys. Looking back, McGary was waaaay too effective inside for them. Tons of layups and easy points.

JayDoc91 7 years, 1 month ago

I'm not losing any sleep over EJ being done, but am I the only one that thought Jeff disappeared at the end? He got dominated by a freshman, and at the end of the game looked like he had lead in his shoes. Of anyone to have the ball in their hands with the game on the line I wish it had been Travis. He was solid in transition all year, getting his layup when we needed points, and wouldn't have panicked and given up his shot at the last second.

John White 7 years, 1 month ago

This is a great point. Releford had also been great driving to the basket in this game. I would have much preferred to see him drive at the end.

DanR 7 years, 1 month ago

Withey was out of the game at a key defensive possession under 1:30 when we were up by 5. Ask Bill about it.

rockchalkjh16 7 years, 1 month ago

Our team does not need us to criticize every last detail of this game right now. They need our support and appreciation. Yes, it didn't turn out the way everyone had hoped, but as Kansas fans we should be gracious and thankful for the great season that we did have.

lama 7 years, 1 month ago

Barkley is correct...what a disaster of a last play.

johninkc1 7 years, 1 month ago

Looks like we really blew an opportunity to get to the Final 4. FGCU is up on FU and will probably be a cake walk for Michigan. Disappointing way for our seniors to go out. I hope Bill learned how important it is to have a true point guard. I feel sorry for EJ. Too many fans are bagging on him. He is a 2 guard, not a point. He made mistakes, but when you win, you win as a team. When you loose, you loose as a team. UGH! We had it.

GreatJake 7 years, 1 month ago

EJ led KU to 30 wins this season ; pretty darn good for a guy who is "not really a true point guard"'

John White 7 years, 1 month ago

E didn't LEAD anything when it comes to those 30 wins. They won 30 despite having EJ at the point. He led the team in exactly one game this season: at Iowa State.

Mike Skiles 7 years, 1 month ago

-1 dude.

You have forgotten the 39 against Iowa State? Guess that was some other player in your mind?

John White 7 years, 1 month ago

Did you not read my last sentence where I said: "He led the team in exactly one game this season: at Iowa State." Also, and I didn't mention this before, but he mostly played the 2 spot in the game at Iowa State with Tharpe handling the ball the majority of the game.

jaycon11 7 years, 1 month ago

sorry, jimbo, but the point guard's play cannot be discounted completely for a team that wins over 30 games. ej was erratic in key games, and downright frustrating in many games, but he also contributed key assists and timely shooting on other games. and, let's not forget, his defense was damn good in many key victories this year. there is no way ku wins 20 games in regular season with anyone but ej at the point, warts and all.

90sHawk 7 years, 1 month ago

Good season. Tough pill to swallow but the sun will rise tomorrow. Sucks for the seniors that there ride is over. For some reason I feel extra sad for Releford; that guy has been balling this tournament like his life depended on it.

jayhawkliz 7 years, 1 month ago

This is bad. I think the coaching at the end of the game was horrible. I do not want to blame a young man, but it was bad at the end. All he had to do was make on free throw. Then... he had a clear path for a 2 pt. shot to tie the game. I think I had every unmentionable come out of my mouth at that pt.

Thanks, Jayhawks for a good season. Sorry for the way it ended. I almost threw up lol. Looking forward to next year as always. I think all Jayhawk Nation will be licking their wounds for a long time. Oh what could have been!

jhox 7 years, 1 month ago

It wasn't just EJ. Bigs missed a bunch of close in shots the second half. Didn't do a good job rebounding the last few minutes and probably could have used Ellis for that reason.. Withey quit challenging shots in the second half, for the most part. For the life of me I can't understand why we didn't move Releford over to Burk when he got hot. We probably should have fouled at the end of regulation instead of allowing the 3 attempt. Not Self's best coaching effort.

90sHawk 7 years, 1 month ago

At least KY was willing to call it like it was in the postgame locker room interviews "we just made bonehead plays at the end"...... Just keepin' it real

bwag 7 years, 1 month ago

It's true, Bill Self messed up sticking with EJ at point through the end of the year. Best coach in College BB but had this blind spot that cost us. Should have transitioned the point 2 months ago and had EJ in the SG rotation. He was playing out of position all year which was clear to everyone but there was misplaced loyalty there. EJ should have been focusing on off guard duties and let Tharpe handle the point.

Feel bad about trashing EJ's play since he was asked to be what he wasn't. Commitment to a 9 player rotation may be putting us in a bad spot. All said though, most wins in last 9 years though.

Pam Goad 7 years, 1 month ago

In 47 years of watching Kansas basketball, I have never been so ashamed and angry at the play of a single player as I was of Elijah Johnson. The flagrant foul was unforgivable. So was the stupidity of his play at the end of the game. Shame on Coach for believing in Johnson. The whole team suffered, and we lost a game we should have won. I hope Coach Self will not make that mistake again.

squawkhawk 7 years, 1 month ago

Well at least the boys played hard. Now it's time to root or the best team in the state, WSU. Now we can focus on football and the dream team.

rockchalkjh16 7 years, 1 month ago

Every single loss at the end of the season is beyond disappointing. It's really pointless now to point fingers. What's sad is that we have to say goodbye to these 5 guys.

Pam Goad 7 years, 1 month ago

Thank you Travis Releford! You are one of my all time favorite Jayhawks! You gave it everything you had. Every game. Thank you!

FarSideHawk 7 years, 1 month ago

Everybody back off of EJ! The kid gave his heart and soul to KU for years and was instrumental in last year's final four run.

He made mistakes today, but none of us can feel as bad as he does right now. So unless you were on the court trying to win the game, give the kid a break.

Give Burke some credit too. He hit some 30ft treys today to ti up the game.

This stings but trashing our own players that gave it their all is just pathetic!

pepper_bar 7 years, 1 month ago

What's pathetic is defending someone who punches opponents in the nuts to gain a competitive edge.

Mike Skiles 7 years, 1 month ago

+1 FarSideHawk, totally agree with your comment.

The trash comments elsewhere on this thread are pretty sad - telling any of our players 'good riddance' is worse than pathetic. Its OK to be dissappointed in the outcome of a game, but come on.... I question their fan allegiance when they attack one of our players and say they are glad they are gone? Pretty lame.

theend 7 years, 1 month ago

Shut up. Who are you.....EJ's keeper? I don't agree with the hate.......But I agree with the anger. There's a difference, Einstein. EJ lost the game. He almost alone gave it away......just gave it away......Unbelievable. But........he's a good kid....his heart is good. He gave his best.....I dont doubt that. But shut up ......people have a right to be angry.

kennethst 7 years, 1 month ago

I think p[eople would be more forgiving if not for the flagrant foul.

texashawk10 7 years, 1 month ago

The lasting image of EJ as a Kansas Jayhawk will be him cheap shotting Mitch McGary in the nuts and then passing up an easy layup to send the game to double OT. That's not a good image to go out with and it will do major damage to EJ's legacy as a Jayhawk. Those two plays in particular, and you throw in the 10 second violation as well will erase a lot of the memories of what EJ did for KU in last year's tournament and I don't blame of people for that.

kennethst 7 years, 1 month ago

EJ was ok.....had some great moments. Doubt he will have much of a legacy at all , though.

texashawk10 7 years, 1 month ago

Tonight guaranteed EJ will have a legacy at KU and that it will not be a positive one.

kennethst 7 years, 1 month ago

EJ did his best....it wasn't enough.

But don't forget last year.......he had some clutch shots to get us far.

No point in compalining about him......he's gone now.

Eric Schneider 7 years, 1 month ago

This one is on the coach. You have the lead the, other ream is pressing, and you leave your best ball handler and free throw shooter on the bench. This one is going to eat at Self for a long time.

DanR 7 years, 1 month ago

Agree... piling on a player is easy, but this one is on Bill. Horrible decisions down the stretch... guys sitting too long, guys not on the court for key stretches and then, of course, that last play, whatever that was.

kennethst 7 years, 1 month ago

Well folks.....dont be too upset. Terrible loss. But even had we won......we may not have gone all the way to the NC. Odds are still against us. You never know.....but it still would have been tough.

By the way......that "shot" by Burke to tie was not a shot.....it was a desperation shot that went in. He got lucky. We lost.

brooksmd 7 years, 1 month ago

You know I'm as disappointed as everyone else, but I want to thank ALL the players on the team for beating the Kitties and ISU 3 times, the 9th straight Big 12 Championship, a Big 12 Tournament Championship, a #1 seed in The Dance and their devotion to KU. And I'm sorry to see ALL of the seniors leave.

Now I'm looking forward to next year and a 10th straight Big 12 Championship.

Rock Chalk!!!

kennethst 7 years, 1 month ago

I think the people that are being hard on EJ are wrong......and I think the people being easy on him are wrong too.

He blew this game......single-handed almost(not quite)......and that flagrant foul was terrible.

But he gave his all.......I don't question that. To hear him in the post game was bare;ly even able to talk. His heart was always there.

That being said......give the kid a break. He derserves it.

Brian Conrad 7 years, 1 month ago

grow up babies.. Players get treated great when they are winning , they can take heat when they play stupid.. EJ deserves the guff .. the hit to the nuts was not the only dirty play.. he has made dirty plays in last few games. play dirty .. make horrible decisions that cost your team .. yes you deserve some HEAT !

Micky Baker 7 years, 1 month ago

Kansas got jobbed in a big way tonight.

pepper_bar 7 years, 1 month ago

This should be good. Please elaborate.

texashawk10 7 years, 1 month ago

Bull crap! KU, specifically EJ, did it to themselves tonight.

Jim Pendleton 7 years, 1 month ago

Thank you to hawk90 and juke4jay for finally being the voice of reason here. Don't get me wrong here, I am frustrated and even a bit angry. Should we have won this game? Absolutely. We gave it away no question about it.

Did Elijah play a bad game? Absolutely he did. However, this is without question a team loss, and not all Elijah's fault. Yeah, one or two free throws at the end, and a turnover or two less, and we probably wrap this one up. There are a lot of comments I am not seeing on here though. Where are the complaints about the front court play on defense? Way too many easy baskets, and way too many second chance points. There was the play near the end where it appeared for all the world there would be a held ball, and it would have been our possession. Instead we lose that, and they wind up with a layup. Where are the complaints about that?

All you complainers about this one person probably somehow complained about his play in the Iowa State game. Without him that night, the streak of conference titles probably is over.

Ben finally starts making shots, and yet we go away from him at the end of the game and OT. It's not just one person's fault he isn't getting the ball, it is everyone who was in the game the same time he was.

We have to give some credit to Michigan. Despite the bad plays by us, they still had to make the shots, and they did. As hot as Burke was at the end, some of those shots you absolutely have no problem with him taking. A couple of those were 30+ feet. I'll let someone have that shot all day long.

Yes this was a game we had no business losing. But to blame it all on one person is just wrong. There were many contributing factors by everyone who played. These were just a few of those. Thanks to all these guys for another overall great year. There are many many programs who would like to be where we are most every year. Look forward to seeing next year's team grow, and hopefully bring home conf title #10 in a row, and another run in the big dance. Rock Chalk!!

Yea, the other contributing factor was that our guards got tired because our sub rotation was screwed up due to Elijah's bone head 1st half grabbing. Wish the refs would have thrown him out with his punch and save Self from 'sticking' with him.

THIS ONE IS EQUAL PARTS BILL SELF AND ELIJAH JOHNSON. PLAYED GREAT WITH HIM ON THE BENCH; PLAYED AWFUL WITH HIM ON THE COURT. LAZY PLAY WHEN HE GOT CALLED FOR 10 SECOND VIOLATION; LACK OF CONCENTRATION ON THE MISSED FREE THROW THAT WOULD HAVE SEALED THE GAME, 5 TURNOVERS, HIT A GUY IN THE GROINW, AND LAST, BUT NOT LEAST, THE LAST PLAY OF OVERTIME WHEN HE HAD A LAYUP AND PASSED TO A WELL GUARDED THARPE. WHY WHY WHY BILL DID YOU KEEP HIM IN? WE WERE PLAYING SO WELL WITHOUT HIM. WHY DESIGN A PLAY FOR HIM AT THE END? WHY WHY WHY? WHY LET HIM BRING THE BALL DOWN THE COURT? WHY WHY WHY? WITHEY, MCLEMORE, YOUNG, AND RELEFORD DESERVED BETTER THAN WHAT SELF AND EJ BROUGHT TO THE TABLE TONIGHT. SO UNFORTUNATE....THESE OPPORTUNITIES DON'T COME OFTEN. SHAME ON YOU BILL; SHAME ON YOU ELIJAH.

For four years EJ has done what was asked of him.

Seems to me that Selfs consistent success revolves around players, like EJ, giving their all - knees included.

This means going hard in practice, playing out of position, red shirting.........and so on.

It's all part of Selfs master plan. And boy oh boy does he come up with some masterful plans.

And in return, seniors get their time to shine.

Perhaps this is why some players transfer and some stick around to be practice players. I bet Self tells them straight up that he doesn't see them getting big time minutes at KU - even if they stick around. Some players understand and realize they are not NBA bound. They stick around and help the rotational players get better and I'm sure Self helps them out in their careers in other avenues.

In my mind this is the reason we miss on some top tier talent. Self is running things his way, this way.

If it's not the right fit for some elite high school talent - so be it. He'll find guys like Young, Traylor, and Tharpe - and he'll mold them into a team that wins games. LOTS of games.

Let me get back on track here.

Self knows what he asks of players. He knows what he asked of EJ.

He's too much of a stand up guy to bench EJ in the final minutes of the game.

Sure, he'll yell at him and get on him in media to light a fire - but he's not going to humiliate him. He's not going to turn his back on a guy who has done so much for this team.

I feel for EJ. Perhaps, in retrospect, he would rather have been benched in order to get the win. Then we would have come back on fire against Florida. But Self figured he'd get through it. He did drain a 3 - but it wasn't enough. Last time I checked this is still a team sport. I didn't see anyone else step up in the final minutes.....

Come on Jayhawk fans. Ease up on the guy. I'm sure we're all upset and frustrated with the loss - but tearing down a key player, a senior, who's given so much is disgusting.

Why get angry and take it out on a young man? Seems like as "adults" we should know better.

Unreal season, thanks Hawks - and good luck in the future seniors!

was it disgusting he grabbed McGary in the nuts???? do you really think Self told him to do that... this was just wrong what it did to Releford, Young , Withey all his team mates and the whole Jayhawk nation .. stop taking up for his dirty play.. this will be nation wide tomorrow.. Jayhawks play dirty ! I think he deserves all the heat he is getting !

obvious troll... not a chocke to lose to 4 seed.... chock is 4 lossing to a 13 like KSU or last year Mizzou 2 seed losing to a 15. or how about Georgetown or Duke .. many ahve had much worse losses than KU.. the reason this hurt was we gave it away.. that is why I am so hard on EJ .. no way if he was on the bench we would have bolwn a 10 point lead in last 2 minutes... look did he have some great games in his career .. absolutely.. did I praise him you bet. did I take up for him when he was struggling. big time.. but the nut grab and just dumb play at the end... well if you can bask in the limelight , you can take the heat when you play dirty .

EJ hit the whole Jayhawk nation in the nuts ! Refs would have won the game for us by ejecting EJ !

kennethst 7 years, 1 month ago

I know I said this before.....but I want to repeat.......That shot that Burke made was not a shot.....it was a desperation heave.

Why do I feel the need to type this?........Well.......because I thought it might make some of us feel better. It was luck......he got lucky.....and it went in........It was nothing like the Chalmers shot.

It happens.....It will happen again. We will be ok.

I'm going to say the most obvious thing that I've not heard from anyone else about EJ's flagrant foul.

If McGary is setting a clean pick his arms aren't up in a shoving motion, they are protecting his nuts just like every other normal basketball player in the history of the sport.

Every Michigan screen all game long was with elbows out to the sides. They have obviously been taught to throw elbows into the person they are screening. Somehow this never got called the entire game. Not one moving screen on Michigan, not one foul for throwing an elbow while setting a screen.

Was EJ's nut slap dirty, almost certainly, I can't say with 100% certainty that it was deliberate. Would I consider the same course of action if a player was deliberately shoving and elbowing me on each screen? Absolutely.

Michigan flat out wasn't being called for anything all game long to keep the game close and the TV ratings up. This is the NCAA tournament; this is how money affects sports.

Bill Self got out coached. How does your best player not take a shot in the entire overtime? Why is the ball not in his hands for the final shot from the inbounds play onward? Even if they double him someone gets a FREE GREAT LOOK. Jeff Withey got dominated. 25/14 by their freshman who was 2 inches smaller. Elijah Johnson saved his worst for last. He just plain SUCKED! In addition to his no class tire tool thug shot to the groin he was dominated by Burke and turned in multiple bonehead plays on offense. Good riddance Elijah. Thanks for a nice career Jeff. Sorry you're leaving Ben.

Once again when the lights shined brightly the CHICKENHAWKS came out.

How does a so called great program like KU...NOT have a true point guard? A point guard that does not turnover the ball...creates assists...distributes the ball...knows the court...does not drive into triple coverage...does not dribble the ball off his knee, thigh, elbow, foot...makes free throws in late game situations because you WANT the ball in his hands.

This one's on SELF

brooksmd 7 years, 1 month ago

Geez, I guess besides the fact EJ sucked and glad he's gone, sounds like maybe we should fire HCBS and find a better replacement since he can't recruit true PG's and gets out coached all the time. At least he's improved to where it's one position he can't recruit vs the whole team like it used to be.
