The Kansas University women’s basketball team weathered a 17-3 run to close the first half and ripped off an 18-6 spurt of their own to start the second to pave the way for a hard-fought 72-63 victory against Sunflower State rival Kansas State on Wednesday night at Allen Fieldhouse.
The victory improved KU to 10-2 on the season and 1-0 in Big 12 play and snapped a four-game losing skid to the Wildcats.
KU’s used a balanced offensive attack to keep the Wildcats in check throughout much of the night. Five Jayhawks reached double figures in scoring, led by sophomore Natalie Knight (16 points) and, of course, senior point guard Angel Goodrich, who controlled all elements of this one and finished with 17 points and nine assists.
Carolyn Davis (14) and Monica Engelman (10) also reached double figures. Engelman’s night made her the 25th player in Kansas history to reach 1,000 points for a career.
CeCe Harper added 10 points and three rebounds (including two big three-pointers) and played some solid defense on KSU’s Brittany Chambers, who finished with a workmanlike 15-point night for Kansas State, which fell to 8-4 overall and 0-1 in Big 12 play.
Next up, KU will play at West Virginia and at Oklahoma State, Jan. 5 and 8, and will return home Jan. 12 for a match-up with Baylor.

A Chantay Caron three-pointer pulls KSU to within 8. Given the way KU closed the first half, that could be significant. Chambers to the line after the timeout.

KU still owns the lead but KSU has the ball and continues to hang close. Should be an entertaining finish. Texada has 19 points to lead all scorers. 5-for-10 from the floor and 8-of-8 from the FT line.
