Kansas State at Kansas coverage

Kansas defeats Kansas State, 72-63

  • 7 p.m., Jan. 2, 2013
  • Allen Fieldhouse, Lawrence, KS

FINAL: Balanced offensive attack leads KU women past K-State, 72-63

The Kansas University women’s basketball team weathered a 17-3 run to close the first half and ripped off an 18-6 spurt of their own to start the second to pave the way for a hard-fought 72-63 victory against Sunflower State rival Kansas State on Wednesday night at Allen Fieldhouse.

The victory improved KU to 10-2 on the season and 1-0 in Big 12 play and snapped a four-game losing skid to the Wildcats.

KU’s used a balanced offensive attack to keep the Wildcats in check throughout much of the night. Five Jayhawks reached double figures in scoring, led by sophomore Natalie Knight (16 points) and, of course, senior point guard Angel Goodrich, who controlled all elements of this one and finished with 17 points and nine assists.

Carolyn Davis (14) and Monica Engelman (10) also reached double figures. Engelman’s night made her the 25th player in Kansas history to reach 1,000 points for a career.

CeCe Harper added 10 points and three rebounds (including two big three-pointers) and played some solid defense on KSU’s Brittany Chambers, who finished with a workmanlike 15-point night for Kansas State, which fell to 8-4 overall and 0-1 in Big 12 play.

Next up, KU will play at West Virginia and at Oklahoma State, Jan. 5 and 8, and will return home Jan. 12 for a match-up with Baylor.

Solid win. Congratulations, Jayhawks. 1-0 feels pretty good!

Mom_of_three

I wish the announcers would stop talking so I could hear KU's great version of Home on the Range

Chris_h

Thanks for the blog. Good win.

Mom_of_three

Clean up the turnovers and fouls and KU could win at KSU this year.

Rock Chalk. Good win ladies

Just wanted to prove we're telling the truth! Glad so many of you stopped by for tonight's blog. Nice win for KU. Not a work of art, but nice nonetheless.

Mom_of_three in reply to John Randall

It was so fun to watch, although a little frustrating at times.

John Randall

Thanks, Tom & Matt for letting us out west keep up with this one.

Appreciate the dueling updates, guys. ;)

Goodrich drains both and KU is 52 seconds from snapping it's 4-game losing streak to KSU.

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff

Angel Goodrich makes two free throws to push KU lead to 68-59 with 51.9 left.

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff

Let me be the first to guess Angel Goodrich makes two free throws her to push KU lead from seven to nine with 51.9 left.

Deep three pointer from Chambers cuts the KU lead to seven as we go under a minute to play. 66-59, Jayhawks, :57.3 left. Chambers has 13 points (on 5-of-12 shooting) but the Jayhawks have done a fabulous job keeping her out of rhythm.

Mom_of_three

Chambers seemed to put up a lot of moves that she was surprised she didn't get a foul call on.

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff

Gardner makes 1 of 2 to pu KU up, 66-56 with 1:42. KU gets ball out after Gardner misses second and ball goes off K-State player OB.

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff

Kansas has done an awesome job defending Chambers, who has just 10 points. Knight's been on her a lot and CeCe Harper took her for a while as well. Knight having some night.

Mom_of_three

that looked more arm than block.

A Chantay Caron three-pointer pulls KSU to within 8. Given the way KU closed the first half, that could be significant. Chambers to the line after the timeout.

Mom_of_three

play smart, ladies, play smart!

Mom_of_three

Knight was fun to watch in high school at Olathe South, but it is much better to watch her in college. plays so calm, cool and collected.

Mom_of_three

angel looked like she was fouled... but no call.

Mom_of_three in reply to John Randall

but you have williams, davis and Gardiner, so she should be able to employ it more often if they are all playing well.

Mom_of_three in reply to Tom Keegan

KSU is so busy trying to keep track of two bigs that our guards can score

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff in reply to John Randall

That's not aggressive thinking. Play to win, don't play to not lose.

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff in reply to Mom_of_three

Season-high, yes, career-high, no. Knight scored 18 points at Oklahoma on March 4 of last season.

John Randall in reply to Mom_of_three

Always there's a risk of foul trouble with both bigs on the floor at once. It's a luxury if Bonnie can do that more than 10-12 min/game.

Mom_of_three

play smart, ladies. play smart

Mom_of_three

Is this Natalie's career high so far?

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff in reply to Mom_of_three

Gardner's a much louder talent than Williams, so I think it makes KU a better team, a tougher team to defend when Gardner's in the game with Davis. It's working so far here the last few minutes.

Mom_of_three in reply to Tom Keegan

it will make them stronger in big 12 play, I would think, with the option of playing two bigs.

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff

Natalie Knight with two more (14 for the game) and KU now leads by nine, 61-52, with 5:39 to play. Knight has been great around the rim tonight, shielding defenders with her body to finish.

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff

Natalie Knight playing a terrific game at both ends. ... Highlight of the night so far, Angel's no-look pass to Gardner on the break.

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff in reply to Mom_of_three

Not very often. I asked Bonnie about it the other day and she said Davis' minutes limitations early in the season and Gardner's poor start kept her from doing it as much as she wanted to. Those two factors are gone now, so it's time to start them together.

Mom_of_three in reply to Matt Tait

that was a doozy

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff

Goodrich's eighth assist of the night a doozy in transition, a no-look pass to Chelsea Gardner for the lay in. KU leads 59-52 with 6:11 to play.

Mom_of_three

woohoo

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff

Angel hits 1 of 2 from the line and KU leads 57-52.

Mom_of_three

But if you have two big girls in, its harder to double team them both. so someone should be open

Mom_of_three in reply to Tom Keegan

how often does that happen?

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff

Chelsea Gardner in for Bunny Williams, playing alongside Carolyn Davis. Always a good idea.

Mom_of_three

All I want is consistency from the refs. thats all. just consistency.

KU still owns the lead but KSU has the ball and continues to hang close. Should be an entertaining finish. Texada has 19 points to lead all scorers. 5-for-10 from the floor and 8-of-8 from the FT line.

Mom_of_three

The announcers just said it looked like Williams was fouled. The first time I heard that out of their mouths as the refs call a touch foul on davis

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff

K-State hanging on for dear life... Down just 56-50, but expending a lot of energy to stay there. 8:30 to play.

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff

CeCe Harper three-pointer at shot-clock buzzer puts KU up 10, 52-42.

Mom_of_three

that was PRETTY

Mom_of_three in reply to Matt Tait

it looked so pretty on tv, too

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff

Texada with a layup to pull the 'Cats within four. But Harper answers with a three to push the lead back to seven. 49-42, 13:00 to play.

Mom_of_three

But I am tired of this KSU love by the announcers.

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff

Angel Goodrich, pound-for-pound as tough as they come, takes second charge of night and has a little trouble getting up from this one.

Mom_of_three

Angel got a little lucky on that one, cause i wasn't for sure she was set

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff

Make that 1-of-9 for KSU this half...

Chris_h

Matt and Tom, thanks for the live blog. Wished I lived closer and could make it to more games. If only we had our own ESPN network... ;)

Mom_of_three

Is it just me or are the refs not giving Carolyn Davis any love??

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff

Knight with a bucket (her 12th points of the night) to put KU back up by two, 42-40.

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff

First-half shooting percentage was heavily in KU's favor all night, but ended up at 48 for Kansas and 44 for K-State.

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff

Carolyn Davis asserting herself in the post. Looks a little annoyed by the pesky pressure from the shorter Wildcats. But she's finishing like a pro and that's what KU has to have to win this one.

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff

Engelman with a bucket in transition ties the game at 38. Looks like yet another KU-KSU game could come down to the wire.

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff

Sometimes you have to throw convention aside and let trust your senior star will be able to play with two fouls in the first half. Have to believe had Goodrich gone right back in after her second foul, Kansas would be leading and she still would have two fouls. As it is, K-State takes a two-point lead into intermission.

Baldbluhawk

Matt great work

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff

Texada with a deep three with 14 seconds to play gives KSU its first lead since 3-2 and sends the Jayhawks to the locker room reeling.

HALFTIME: KSU 36, KU 34.

Wildcats closed the first half on a 17-3 run...

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff

Texada drains both and the 'Cats trail by one, 34-33. KSU has nine points from the free throw line so far.

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff

K-State out-toughing KU right now and making the Jayhawks very uncomfortable. KSU's Texada headed to the FT line (again) to try to pull the Wildcats within a point.

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff

Free throw good. It's a one-possession game.

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff

Three-point play for Knight puts KU back up nine. Great first half for the Olathe sophomore so far.

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff in reply to Dynamitehawk

That'd be cool, too.

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff

Caron with her second foul for K-State. That's big because she's been one of the few players to battle the bigger Jayhawks inside. Caron out Woods in. 2:30 first half.

Dynamitehawk

As much as I like you guys doing this, I wish we were at the Sugar Bowl right now...
