FINAL: KU defense stifles Baylor in 61-44 victory

By Matt Tait.

The Kansas University men's basketball team's stout defense frustrated visiting Baylor from start to finish during Monday's 61-44 Big Monday victory at Allen Fieldhouse.

The Jayhawks limited the Bears to just 23 percent shooting for the game — including 21 percent in the first half — and raced out to an early double-digit lead behind strong play in the paint at both ends.

Jeff Withey, Kevin Young, Jamari Traylor and Perry Ellis protected the middle on defense, and the Jayhawks pushed the pace and got up and down the floor at every possible opportunity, particularly in the first half, where the Jayhawks (15-1 overall, 3-0 Big 12) took a 33-20 lead to the locker room.

Kansas hit Baylor (11-5, 3-1) with a 10-5 run to open the second half and the Bears never cut the KU lead below 13 (49-36 at 9:58) from that point on.

Several Jayhawks contributed to Monday's victory. Ben McLemore led KU with 17 points and eight rebounds but also left the game late with an apparent ankle injury that kept him down, writhing in pain, for a couple of minutes. When McLemore got to his feet, he went straight to the locker room.

Elijah Johnson chipped in 12, Releford 10 and Young had four points and seven rebounds. Withey added eight points, six rebounds and three blocks.

One of the most pleasant surprises for the home team had to be the fact that Perry Ellis looked a lot more confident and showed flashes of what he's capable of while recording six points and six rebounds in 20 minutes.

Here's a quick look back at some of the action.

The game turned when: The Jayhawks turned a 12-9 lead into a double-digit lead with a 10-0 run midway through the first half. McLemore buried a three, Naadir Tharpe recorded a rare tip-in off of a McLemore miss in transition, McLemore followed that with an NBA-esque and-one, three-point play and Perry Ellis drove from the top of the key down the lane to push the KU lead to 22-9.

Offensive highlight: With KU's lead down to 23-18 and the Bears on a 9-1 run, senior forward Kevin Young out-fought Baylor towers Isaiah Austin and Rico Gathers for a loose ball and a quick layup that ended KU's field goal drought of more than five minutes and pushed the lead back to seven. Two trips later, the Jayhawks led by 11 again and the Bears were back on their heels. Runner-up (or maybe even the winner): Elijah Johnson's off-balance left-handed floater and the ensuing free throw that put KU up 56-38 with 5:40 to play.

Defensive highlight: How about KU limiting Baylor sharp-shooter (and former Jayhawk killer) Brady Heslip to zero points on just three shots, one from three-point range. It's the second time the bomber has disappeared against KU but the first since he lit them up for 12 back-breaking points in the semifinals of last year's Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City, Mo.

Key stat: Blocked shots. Despite KU continually turning the Bears away inside — KU blocked 10 of 28 Baylor shots in the first half and 13 for the game — the Bears kept trying their luck down low throughout the game.

Up next: The Jayhawks will return to the road Saturday, Jan. 19, when they travel to Austin, Texas to take on the Longhorns at 1 p.m.

Brent should cut the Viagras in half for awhile!

Any updates on Mac?

Matt Lacey

And now it's blowing up on Twitter, and BMac is trending even in Orlando.

Justin Daniel

How many points did Simeon average his freshmen year? Trying to see how Ellis is comparing.

Cshjhawk in reply to Kye Clark

Ole man feeling his oats or something!

Matt Lacey

Maybe Brent just wanted to put a thumb in the eye of the PC police. Else, he really is losing it.

Matt Lacey

It's almost like it was intentional.

Kye Clark in reply to Matt Lacey

Yeah that was pretty weird. Especially after he was all fawning over what's his name's girlfriend during the Alabama-ND game

79ictjhawk in reply to Matt Lacey

yup, didn't say what

Crimsonphoenix in reply to Matt Lacey

Well, we can all agree to that tonight.

Mom_of_three in reply to Matt Lacey

thats what the hubby thought, too.... and asked why??

If there is good news about the sprain, at least it was his right ankle. A right hander generally explodes off of the left leg when jumping. But he won't be full speed in quite some time.

Matt Lacey

Did Musberger just say Holly Rowe was really smokin' tonight?

Darin Bradley

Rock Chalk !

Brian Haase

Wissoxfan83 in reply to Brian Haase

Oh that's right Dr. Haasehawk!

Right ankle sprain on BMac looks small judging by the replay. No, it's not a high ankle sprain, and I'd give it a grade 1 at most (least worrisome). Probably scared him more than anything, and I'm bettin' he'll be ready for the next game. (Full disclosure: I'm a P.T.)

Mark Hopkins in reply to Duane Rice

Maybe another will emerge but I would have to say ISU.

I never thought Baylor could hold KU to 61 and lose.

Brian Haase in reply to Wissoxfan83

i know, some of us have been drinking a little... and how do you know we're not doctor's?! ha

Jeremy Wilhelm in reply to Wissoxfan83

Yeah, what exactly does a high ankle sprain look like :-)

Duane Rice

There is no reason that KU cant do this on defense every game.

Justin Daniel

Our offense still needs to improve

Baylor 44
Kansas 61

Jesse Newell

Baylor ends at 0.65 points per possession.

Wissoxfan83 in reply to Brian Haase

Just kind of funny hearing everyone's diagnosis!

Thesychophant in reply to Stupidmichael

But you do go to the locker room when you are the heartbeat of the team and the victory is sealed.

Perry! WTF!

updates on #23???

Stat of the night 101-1 at AFH.

Brian Haase in reply to Wissoxfan83

i thought that's what these things were for?

Jaybate in reply to Wissoxfan83

My armchair needs a cure.

Brian Powell in reply to Jesse Newell

missed his 2nd one.... They should've given Baylor a steal on that one entry pass.

Should have more 'assists' than one!

Duane Rice in reply to Mark Hopkins

Im going with Baylor or Iowa state. Those teams are both young with a lot of talent.

Darin Bradley

C'mon Perry. You're a good FT shooter. Concentrate

Two words everybody: Andrea Hudy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She will work her magic!!!!!!!!! I'm sure she has seen and treated a lot more than just an ankle sprain (if that)

A lot of armchair doctors here right now

Brian Haase in reply to Stupidmichael

true, i'm being optimistic for sure, i'm just hoping i'm right. Just a bad twist maybe a minor sprain and he'll be 100% in a week or two

Jhox in reply to Brian Haase

Looked like a high ankle sprain to me. I'm guessing out a minimum of 2 weeks.

Jesse Newell in reply to Brian Powell

One assist to two turnovers. A lot of transition points for KU.

Darin Bradley

Hard foul

Brian Powell

what's EJ's assist-to-turn ratio? I think that's my favorite stat tonight.

oh we can't lose ben

The only thing certain is nothing is certain.--Montaigne

Stupidmichael in reply to Brian Haase

There are different degreees of sprains. You don't go to the locker room if you just rolled your ankle.

Wissoxfan83 in reply to Aircapjay

Is that like the old days when we'd get pizza if they went over 100?

Mark Hopkins

Who is the 2nd best team in the Big 12 this year? Iowa State, KSU!

David Davison in reply to Brian Powell

Yeah thats what I thought. Didn't look too bad to me. Hopefully its nothing serious.

Brian Haase in reply to Stupidmichael

oh it'll swell up for sure and be there for a while but i highly doubt it was a sprain. just from watching and having sprained both of my ankles to the point my ligaments are completely torn

Duane Rice

It looks like we are a defensive team. I think we should embrace that.

ok. Keep BU below 50!

Darin Bradley

Didn't look terrible on the replay. Glad we'e off till Saturday

That is the face of a man who has just seen the best player he ever had go down.

Doesn't look too bad from the replay. He be fine in three weeks.

Brian Powell

wow, that looks like he barely tweaked it at all..

Adam Evans

At least he didn't roll it. It looked like it just a side twist and not a roll. Still no good

Cshjhawk in reply to Jesse Newell

Probably scared the heck out him more than anything else!

Sandeep Kalburgie

All fingers crossed!!!

Burning incense at the altar of the BB gods right now.

Stupidmichael in reply to Brian Haase

I'm sure he sprained it. Hopefully just a minor one. Will probably nag him for several weeks.

Jeremy Wilhelm

Step away from the ledge everyone. Looks like an ankle, which sucks, but I don't think it'll be too serious.

Mark Hopkins

Jesse Newell

McLemore walked back to the locker room on his own. Very slowly but on his own.

Brian Haase

didn't look serious enough to be a sprain just one of those painful ankle twists

Joel Thomas

Looked like ankle, but not sure where he was holding before they went to break

Oh, I take it back. Self will just tell him to tape it up and play. :-)

oh god

Brian Powell in reply to Kent Wells

hoping. when he got pissed at the floor, I was worried he knew it was the knee.

Jesse Newell

McLemore helped to his feet. He's walking on his own. Very gingerly. Right ankle, it looks like.

give us some good news Jess!

Joel Thomas

Ruh roh

Joe Satterwhite

Mama noooooooooo

Brian Haase

ankle for sure, i watched it on replay, rolled right ankle

Well, this sucks.

Oh crap. We cannot afford to lose #23.

Kent Wells in reply to Brian Powell

Looked like an ankle...

Hope it's a pro soccer injury

Uh ohh

Joel Thomas

More important than low 3-pt % is Heslip's no 3-pointers.

Cramp. (I hope).

bye-bye ring?

Brian Powell

ankle... or knee??

02:44 left in Second Half
Baylor 42
Kansas 61

Jesse Newell

McLemore slamming the court in pain.

Brian Haase

oh no

Jesse Newell

Heslip has only attempted one three tonight.

Now dats moe like it.

BMac seems to wait until the last 3 minutes to put the gas down.

Brian Powell

EJ with the solid game on the handles!

Joel Thomas

Reverse jinx

Jesse Newell in reply to Jesse Newell

McLemore the closer.

Jesse Newell

McLemore the closer.

Kent Wells

Hey, Jesse. Have a safe trip to the Fieldhouse Saturday, ha ha. Wish you were making the trip. Early flight tomorrow. I declare this one over. Good night all...

Joel Thomas

Not shooting well, but we were due for a night like this. Good night to shoot poorly.

Darin Bradley in reply to Jesse Newell

Wow! Doesn't seem like they've been in that much

Jesse Newell

KU just 2-for-12 from three. Jayhawks have taken mostly good ones, too.
