Kansas defeats Southeast Missouri State, 74-55

  • 7 p.m., Nov. 9, 2012
  • Allen Fieldhouse, Lawrence, KS

FINAL: Defense leads KU to 74-55 victory over Southeast Missouri

The Kansas men's basketball team held Southeast Missouri to 29-percent shooting in a season-opening 74-55 victory on Friday night at Allen Fieldhouse.

KU's defense was especially stifling in the first half, as SEMO made just 6 of 29 shots (21 percent) as the Jayhawks took a 32-17 halftime advantage.

SEMO closed KU's lead to 43-37 with 11:43 left in the game, but KU answered with a 21-10 run to take control.

The Jayhawks won despite making just 2 of 21 three-pointers (9.5 percent).

"I thought we did some good things considering they only shot 29 percent and we out-rebounded them (49-37)," KU coach Bill Self said. "We only turned it over 13 times and we go 24-of-28 from the free-throw line. That (typically) is going to be a 40-point game.

"There is no way you can't win that game by 30 or 40 unless you go 2-for-21 from three."

Jeff Withey led KU with 17 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. Perry Ellis added 15 points on 5-for-9 shooting with eight rebounds, while Naadir Tharpe also had double figures with 10 points.

Ben McLemore had a balanced line, posting in nine points, 12 rebounds, five assists and three blocks to go with a turnover.

"It blows my mind that we are not an aggressive group," Self said. "We are a passive group right now, and we have to pick it up. I'll keep saying it, and I'm not going to back off of it."

KU (1-0) will play Michigan State at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Champions Classic in Atlanta.

Ellis is our savior for these first 3 games

Jaybate

Naadir is falling away to his left on his trey; that's why they aren't falling. He wasn't doing that in the first EX game. It started in the 2rd EX game.

Lajayhawk

Jesse, have you guys always had the live box score? I always pulled up ESPN or Yahoo last year to follow the stats...

Jesse Newell

Ellis with a nice back-to-the-basket move.

Darin Bradley

Wow, he walked. No call.

Jesse Newell in reply to Dynamitehawk

Yeah. I know. Ha.

Jaybate

Tharpe playing his best defense of his career.

Lajayhawk in reply to Jaycon11

Double off the wall.

Jaybate

The reason the game has tightened is that our TOs swelled to 10 and theirs stabilized at 9. At the same time, their steals spiked to 7 and ours flatlined at 3. Translation: they are winning the disruption statistic.

Todd Simpson

Jesse I'm going with 6-7 bunnies missed

Darin Bradley

Has Travis made a shot other than dunks tonight?

Jaycon11 in reply to Lajayhawk

but no mayonnaise! that's treason.

Lajayhawk in reply to Jesse Newell

BOOM. I see it. Thanks, my friend. As always, you're the best.

Dynamitehawk

Jesse (Moderator) - TK did not answer my question tthis week...

Jaycon11

Lajayhawk in reply to Jaycon11

I'm pretty sure that means "Freedom fries."

Jesse Newell

KU 15-for-30 from two-point range.

Jaybate

KU is shooting a withering 5.9% from trey.

Stupidmichael

Jamari just slapped the s out of perry. Am I the only one that doesn't get the noggin slapping??

Jesse Newell in reply to Lajayhawk

Give it a refresh. Then look for a blue box score link.

Lajayhawk in reply to Jesse Newell

Awesome, thanks, Jesse. Not seeing it, though... where above?

Jaybate

Its interesting. SEMSU has basically sand bagged us and is now sticking the ball down the middle of the lane exactly the way KU did last season and like Self said he wanted EJ to do.

Danr

On the other hand, our D still looks pretty good.

Jaycon11

ellis looks like he'll be a monster at the 4 position. maybe even by february.

Good pass from Traylor, and Ellis will have a chance for a three-point play.

Duane Rice

I love a good pass!

Darin Bradley

Atta boy Ellis. Great body control

Brian Haase in reply to Lajayhawk

41-53 KU

Jesse Newell in reply to Lajayhawk

There's a live box score link above if you need it.

Iandhi in reply to Darin Bradley

Okay, now, now.

Lajayhawk

Gracias, for the scores.

Lajayhawk in reply to Iandhi

Yeah, I know... going with the flow... don't think she said that...

Jayhawkinatl

51-41

Darin Bradley in reply to Lajayhawk

51 - 41 good guys

Duane Rice in reply to Jaybate

they were picked 2nd behind murray st. which is a very good team.

Stupidmichael

Benjamin is always around the ball. It's amazing.

Lajayhawk

Seriously, anyone wanna give me a heads up on the score? It's pixel blob to pixel blob right now...

Kufaninflorida

for some reason ESPN is malfunctioning

Brian Haase

hmmm wonder how we would look with KY in there

Iandhi in reply to Lajayhawk

That's not the post I was replying to, but...

Jaycon11 in reply to Lajayhawk

mais oui.

Darin Bradley

pound it inside.

Jesse Newell in reply to Jaybate

Murray State's pretty good with an All-American on the roster, though.

Jesse Newell

Stone turned an ankle. Could be a big loss for SEMO.

Jaybate

For what its worth, I think SEMSU is a much better team than anyone is giving them credit for. I reckon htey will win their conference this season.

Danr

Seniors need to be men, or this season will be very bad. Releford especially.

Lajayhawk in reply to Jaycon11

You guys and your French...

Brian Haase

i know we're young but we're not gonna win games playing like this in the BigXII... our defense is looking good though, thankfully

Lajayhawk in reply to Iandhi

She gets the loose balls?

Jaybate

The JTrain has to go ahead and take that shot in the paint.

Darin Bradley

Shoot the ball when 4 ft away Traylor

Jaycon11

no idea what is going on w/ my espn fed. it's like i've been transported back to my french impressionist class at ku 3 decades ago...

Iandhi in reply to Lajayhawk

That's what she said?

Brian Powell in reply to Stupidmichael

"loose balls" called!

Traylor checks in.

Lajayhawk in reply to Lajayhawk

Lucky these guys blow.

Stupidmichael

Loose balls not going KUs way like they were

Lajayhawk

WTF??

Jaybate

From here on out it appears we are going to attack on the wings.

Iandhi in reply to Darshana Benhur

Second that

Darshana Benhur in reply to Jaybate

great idea I think he should just let perry and BMAC take over

Lajayhawk

We're clearly going to have to be a slashing team all year. Just don't have the consistency to be a jump shooting team.

Lajayhawk

WTH is the score??

Jaybate

Self may just have made a momentous decision. With that drive of Ben's, it appears that the team's offense has been put on his back. It reminds me of when Self shrugged and turned it over to Brandon Rush as a freshman.

Brian Powell

EJ limped off after that 4th foul. His hamstring?

Lajayhawk in reply to Jaybate

Kid is going to be RI-DONK-U-LOUS be season's end.

Jaycon11

there's the mac i was expecting from the talk last year.

Danr

Whoa.. Black shows up off the dribble.

Brian Powell in reply to Melrank

agree - you can't execute it any better than we do, usually, and we got great looks there .... but I'm growing more certain the more times I see it, that the bottom line isn't as productive as we think it is or should be (total points scored vs. 1 regular flow poss) because the %s are below avg. I'd start tracking it if I could see every game, but I can't.

Another thing that seems to be a factor is that the first shot/poss. always seems to be a jumper or set shot. No chance for a foul (long term affect to game and other team) or FTs (net points in this comparison). And while it might be trey, it's a bit rushed or forced and the % goes down.

The logic that "Self does it so it must be correct/right/effective" because he's got the job and we don't... is pretty faulty. That would mean that everything he does is 100% correct and effective. The perfect coach! He might just be listening to someone that explained the basic math to him once but left out a dozen other factors to consider. They probably don't track it, either.

KU with a little breathing room.

Todd Simpson

Jaybate your right they are Thicker but they aren't quicker drive the ball!! OOP Time

Duane Rice

you could just see the bounce in his step

Brian Haase

BMAC

Darin Bradley

Big time move!

Lajayhawk

Sweet move.

Jesse Newell

There's a nice drive from McLemore. Timeout SEMO.

Jaybate in reply to Lajayhawk

Yeah, Ben Mac looks like what EJ once looked like before the knee injury in terms of bounce. Tonight, EJ's knees look more like Joe Namath's knees than EJs.

Darshana Benhur in reply to Darin Bradley

yh like not hitting 17 3pointers. I dont remember KU ever being a good 3pt shooting team

Todd Simpson

perhaps this team plays better against better competition

Jaycon11

there ya go. nothing wrong with those brands.

Jaybate in reply to Farsidehawk

Yup, they are going to put a knot on our heads, as Self said. We can probably beat them, if Elijah's leg problems are not as serious as I fear they are.

Darin Bradley

its an easy game when you play to your strengths.

Jaycon11 in reply to Iandhi

there ya go.

Iamjayhawk

KU is overrated this year!

Lajayhawk in reply to Jaycon11

Yeah, I have no doubt this will be a totally different team come conference play, but... wow. The small amount I've seen... we look like a hot mess.

Iandhi

SEMO on 37-22 run?

Dynamitehawk

Self will use the stepping on throats analogy this year.

Bwag

Gotta be stronger there.

Darin Bradley

good look inside. need to hit the ft's

Lajayhawk in reply to Jaybate

Dude's clearly the most athletic on the team. It's not even close.

Afmoore06 in reply to Darshana Benhur

Jamari and Anrio are the mini-Trob and mini-Tyshawn players. not ready for primetime

Jaycon11 in reply to Lajayhawk

honestly, yes. but if there's a coach out there to whip 'em into shape, it's self.

Jaybate in reply to Todd Simpson

Shorter, but their guys actually outweigh all of our guys position by position inside, if I recall correctly. I looked at this roster a couple weeks ago.

Melrank in reply to Rob Bedford III

I'll take KU and 10 for any amount you want

Yahweh

I knew we were going to be exposed as an incredibly inexperienced, incoherent, incongruous team... I just didn't think it would be this game. Wow.

Afmoore06

I am going to have to catch Bill's post game audio..... Soft? We are the fluffiest!

Darshana Benhur

Anyone know where I can find Mini T-Rob and Mini Tyshawn I think this teams needs them bad

Cody Riedy

Is EJ just cramping up? I hope he doesn't have a strained hamstring - that's a kind of injury that is like a groin injury - about the only thing you can do is rest it.

Farsidehawk in reply to Jaybate

MSU is thick inside!

Bwag

Our upper classmen don't know how to set the pace, set the example and lead yet.
