Kansas defeats Southeast Missouri State, 74-55

  • 7 p.m., Nov. 9, 2012
  • Allen Fieldhouse, Lawrence, KS

FINAL: Defense leads KU to 74-55 victory over Southeast Missouri

The Kansas men's basketball team held Southeast Missouri to 29-percent shooting in a season-opening 74-55 victory on Friday night at Allen Fieldhouse.

KU's defense was especially stifling in the first half, as SEMO made just 6 of 29 shots (21 percent) as the Jayhawks took a 32-17 halftime advantage.

SEMO closed KU's lead to 43-37 with 11:43 left in the game, but KU answered with a 21-10 run to take control.

The Jayhawks won despite making just 2 of 21 three-pointers (9.5 percent).

"I thought we did some good things considering they only shot 29 percent and we out-rebounded them (49-37)," KU coach Bill Self said. "We only turned it over 13 times and we go 24-of-28 from the free-throw line. That (typically) is going to be a 40-point game.

"There is no way you can't win that game by 30 or 40 unless you go 2-for-21 from three."

Jeff Withey led KU with 17 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. Perry Ellis added 15 points on 5-for-9 shooting with eight rebounds, while Naadir Tharpe also had double figures with 10 points.

Ben McLemore had a balanced line, posting in nine points, 12 rebounds, five assists and three blocks to go with a turnover.

"It blows my mind that we are not an aggressive group," Self said. "We are a passive group right now, and we have to pick it up. I'll keep saying it, and I'm not going to back off of it."

KU (1-0) will play Michigan State at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Champions Classic in Atlanta.

Farsidehawk

Now we just need to snap EJ out of the funk, just like Withey did, and we will be ok. This team will come together nicely. We looked just as sloppy last year, with a much more veteran starting 5.

Lajayhawk in reply to Jaycon11

And BMac.

Jaybate

Travis' game worries me more than everything but EJ's legs. 4TOs, 3-11 from the field, and 0-5 from trey.

Jaycon11

bring on the spartans!!! snicker.

Duane Rice

Maryland up by 2

Darshben

Go MD go!

Darshben in reply to Lajayhawk

I guess not that old. But I just wanted to some comparison b/w the two classes

Duane Rice

that could of been the coolest stat ever. Coach Self has more conference championships then home loses!

Kufaninflorida

Andrew White made a 3 point basket

Melrank

Lots o fun - see ya Tuesday! Rock Chalk!

Jaycon11 in reply to Lajayhawk

no doubt. if ellis was a true junior this year, we'd be damn good.

Lajayhawk in reply to Jaybate

Agree. In the small amount I saw, I agree.

Jesse Newell

KU opens the season with a home victory.

Jaybate in reply to Danr

Have a fight with the mister, or something?

Lajayhawk in reply to Jaycon11

True. We do have a future NBA player at the 3, though. But he lacks the experience of last year's future NBA-er.

Darin Bradley

Well we got the first one out of the way, but really need our Seniors to lead. Gotta say I'm a bit disappointed. Freshmen were as good as advertised. Huge upside. Should be fun come January when they have it figured out.

Jaybate in reply to Lajayhawk

But he's getting there; this is the first game where he finally showed me he's turning the corner.

Danr in reply to Jaybate

Uk douche

Cody Riedy

Not sure which Freshman is going to play the role of chalmers if we are comparing classes. Not sure how much PT white or adams are going to get.

Todd Simpson

that wasn't a 3 no I can't believe my eyes that wasn't a 3

Lajayhawk in reply to Jaybate

Always been an issue of his. I think he'll improve as the season goes on. He's likely always going to be a bit more sloppy with the ball than we'd like to see in a PG, however.

Jaycon11

1st game asssessment of the rest of the season: it was easy to overachive with a future nba player in the post; this year, finishing 1st in conference will be an achievement.

Jaybate in reply to Danr

Translate.

Helen Gross

When will Young be back?

Jaybate in reply to Lajayhawk

Tharpe had the lone make from trey, but took 6 to get it. :-)

Lajayhawk in reply to Darshben

Watching 05-06 Freshman makes you old???? Yikes....

Hard to compare, but they're definitely close, talent-wise (assuming you are calling BMac a freshman)

Pepper_bar

This is a ten-loss team.

Danr in reply to Jaybate

This team is better than your ky 05 team

Jaybate

Ben Mac maybe the first 2 guard to average 10 rpg!!!!

Darin Bradley

Wesley wasn't ready. BMac had him set up nice

Brian Haase in reply to Cody Riedy

agreed, but i really think we need more help from a ball handling aspect not the PF spot

Jaybate in reply to Lajayhawk

Tharpe's only problem is an Assist to TO ratio of 2:2, but it probably would have been higher had anyone on KU been able to hit a ship with a stick standing beside it amidships.

Cody Riedy

I really think that Kevin Young returning is going to help this team.

Lajayhawk in reply to Lajayhawk

Nevermind, just glanced at the box score I have open. :-) It was Tharpe, so... he's doing better than everyone else, at least...

Iandhi in reply to Darshben

Since you said older I am assuming you are referring to the 1905-06 team.

Lajayhawk in reply to Jaybate

Yeah, well, that goes for everybody.... who had the lone make from trey?

Melrank

I resent that request.

Jaybate in reply to Lajayhawk

Tharpe looked excellent despite sucking on the draw from trey.

Darshben

Any of the older fans on here can you please compare this years freshman to 05-06?

Melrank

Turg has pulled within 2 midway thru the 2nd half.

Jaybate

Withey looked unable to sustain positions inside on both ends, but he still wound up 14//9 and 5 blocks.

Lajayhawk

I've only seen a bit of the game in a pixelated, blurry mess, but am I wrong in saying that Tharpe hasn't looked too bad?

Brian Haase

Kai! I belive that we will win!

Dynamitehawk

Golfed the last two days. awesome.

Cody Riedy

BMac looks so much like BRush, but might be more athletic.

Mangino_maniac

BMac sticking this tongue out and smiling for the camera on that dunk... should be a sweet pic tomorrow

Darin Bradley

Nice shot is the flow of the offense by Tharpe. Need more of that.

Jaybate

Withey, Releford, Ben and Elijah goose eggs on steals.

Lawkan

not forcing the travels either.

Cody Riedy

If EJ and Releford just had decent games tonight, this game would probably look quite a bit different. Hard to believe, but they've contributed the least to the game tonight, especially taking into account that they are returning starters and seniors.

Dynamitehawk in reply to Stupidmichael

Still Scared..

Jaybate

I never dreamed this group of perimeter guys could not get more than 3 steals. They really have to work on their disruption.

Lajayhawk in reply to Jesse Newell

Might want to let the guys know the actual box score update needs a little work. Has BMac at only 8 boards right now. Main score is doing good, though.

KU now 1-for-20 from three. Yikes.

Stupidmichael

Better

Stupidmichael

Tharpe a much bett shooter when he doesnt fade away unnecessarily, go figure...

Brian Haase

EJ with a terrible game

Lajayhawk

Also going to be a rough year if EJ makes a habit of fouling out....

Bwag

Great line: The way the Jayhawks are shooting the 3 (1-20), it's a good bet to crash the boards.

Jesse Newell in reply to Jesse Newell

He fouled out twice last year.

Darin Bradley

Done.

Stoops

BMAC is nasty!

Jesse Newell

That's five for EJ.

Duane Rice

looks like BMAC knows where that camera is.

Dynamitehawk

BMAC is a player. He's all Paul Pierce. Love him.

Iandhi

Can BMac extend both arms completely straight?

Stupidmichael

Hasnt ej fouled out like once in his career? And now he's threatening to foul out in his first game of the season...

Melrank

Quietest 20 point win ever.

Jaybate

Shoot, they may have to move Ben Mac into the post!!!

Duane Rice

get it to ellis

Dynamitehawk in reply to Jesse Newell

That ref was in the game.

Todd Simpson

Jesse what was that on the baseline there the ref was saying to the SEMO guy

Jaybate

Which of EJ's knees got the scope? His left knee looks stiff as a board, but his right knee looks weak.

Jesse Newell in reply to Jesse Newell

That's Ellis' line.

Lajayhawk

1-18,000,000 from 3. Numbers like that ain't gonna make this an easy season...

Jesse Newell in reply to Jesse Newell

15 points, eight rebounds.

Jesse Newell

Ellis to the left hand in the lane. Takes advantage of passive defense.

Darin Bradley in reply to Jesse Newell

What's Perry's line tonight Jesse? Does he have a double-double?

Brian Haase in reply to Jesse Newell

yikes... at least he's made one?

Jesse Newell in reply to Brian Haase

1-for-9.

Jaybate in reply to Jesse Newell

Its not just Withey. They are a much better team without EJ too. Withey isn't strong enough. EJ doesn't have enough flexibility left in that one wheel.

Lajayhawk in reply to Jaycon11

Probably shouldn't compare it to the FB team, though, when I use the phrase, "this is how we'll win".....

Stupidmichael

Naadir has the potential to be the best penetrator on the team. He just needs to look to shoot in the paint more often. Too passive in the paint. Attack!

Todd Simpson

my word...self needs to call a Time out and say to them next person to shoot a 3 is benched for the rest of the game

Brian Haase

Jesse what is releford on 3 for the season(including 2 exhibition games)? 0-6? has he made one?

Darin Bradley

Geez. C'mon Travis!

Jaycon11 in reply to Lajayhawk

can't argue. structure is fitting this team like an ill-fitting prom tux.

Lajayhawk in reply to Jesse Newell

Awesome addition. You can set it for 30 or 60 second-refresh. Seems like it's fairly close to real time. May be minute or so behind. Works for me!!

score update quickly. Box score not so much.

Lajayhawk

I'm telling ya. This is a slashing team. Just like the FB team is an option team. It's how we're gonna win this year.

Darin Bradley

I like the hustle. Gettin after em bit now.

Jaybate

Tharpe is playing himself into a 20 minute man way sooner than I though he would this season. Goof for !@#$%ing him.

And what a great bounce pass on the break.

Jesse Newell

KU starting to pull away with Withey on the bench.

Jesse Newell in reply to Lajayhawk

Nope. Just got it this year. Not sure how often it updates.

Darin Bradley

Nice play Tharpe
