Heck of an effort and heck of a run.... No shame in losing to Tennessee in the Sweet 16. KU just ran out of gas.

So proud of what these girls have accomplished. Looks like this one is over, but I'm already anxious to see them play next year. Lots to build on.

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff

Angel reached the 20-point milestone again. That makes her 3 for 3 in that regard in NCAA Tournament play.

Nwhawkfan

Big thanks to Keegs & Matt for the game coverage!

Ku_meggan in reply to Woodlingwho

I was actually referring to the TV commentary. Sorry, I wasn't clear. Nice shot of the band. I was in the WB band 1999, 2000 and 2001.

Ku_meggan in reply to Tom Keegan

I grew up in STL, too!

Let's just hope Martin stays put, and Danning stays forever...

No quit in these Jayhawks. Had lunch yesterday on The Hill in St. Louis. That's where grew up and perhaps first said, "It ain't over til it's over." It ain't over.

Woodlingwho

@ku_meggan just a bunch of fairweather fans on here...they don't care except when winning.

Hawkswin in reply to Ku_meggan

It was pro-KU when we were leading...

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff

Angel continues to look big-time, even as the rout is on. Imagine how good she would look if she had Asia Boyd in the game to take advantage of her passing skills.

Ku_meggan

I only started watching at the half. Was the commentary always so biased towards Tennessee or did it just start when Tennessee came back and took the lead?

Nwhawkfan

Well, it was a good run while it lasted. Well done Jayhawks! You just ran into a tougher D today. Looking forward to Angel's senior year, and hopefully, a healthy team for a change.

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff

Simmons has 22 points off the bench. Bench points: Tennessee 37, Kansas 5.

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff

KU's only chance of coming back and winning this is to put the five most talented players on the floor and see what happens. That means it's time for Asia Boyd to check into the game. Maybe she should just run to the table and check herself in.

Still proud of this KU women's team, but they've got to play with composure

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff

During this commercial break, it's time to weigh in on coaching changes in the men's game. Tim Miles was a good selection for Nebraska, but it's a tough, tough place to win. Frank Martin could end up at South Carolina. If Martin goes, maybe K-State goes after Gregg Marshall. If Cats locked up Marshall, would Wichita State go after Danny Manning?

Kesmithstl1 in reply to Tom Keegan

I think KU has to love where they're at right now.

Hawk90

Shots that were dropping for us now are dropping for them. They still haven't stopped our drive yet, we just aren't making the shots we were.

Kesmithstl1

funny how taunting is only called in the men's game.

Eric Baker

Except there...

Eric Baker

We're not able to get it inside as much, and the jumpshots aren't falling.

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff

Fans on Twitter are jumping off the bandwagon already, but it's just a five-point deficit and Kansas has the ball. A little premature.

Kansas putting up bad shots on offense and not as attentive as in first half defensively. Ariel Massengale has eight points and five assists off the bench for Vols, a much deeper team than Kansas.

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff

Timeout Jayhawks.... KU falls behind by 5 and doesn't look good on offense at all. No flow, no rhythm and not nearly enough Angel Goodrich. Not sure if Tennessee has done something to take her away or if the offense is just stagnant right now. Big possession coming up after the break.

Eric Baker

Refs letting Tennessee maul us under the basket.

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff

Huge stretch here... KU's gotta hang close.

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff

Chelsea Gardner's third foul sends her to the bench. Tennessee up 47-44, biggest lead of the game for Vols.

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff

Tennessee's first lead, 44-42, with 14:58, since 2-0. Once trailed 26-12.

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff

Bonnie recruited some pretty darn good talent to this team. If Carolyn Davis had not been hurt and Keena Mayes had not transferred, imagine this rotation. Starters: Angel, Mayes, Sutherland, Gardner, Davis. Oh well, even with the transfer and injury, KU is doing great.

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff in reply to Nwhawkfan

Fully expecting her to be back next season, but I think the expectations will be on her to deliver this again (or at least make it to the tournament and compete) before you see another extension. Long story short, I don't think this game has any bearing on her future at Kansas.

Kesmithstl1

Tennessee women have always played with swagger. Even when they're sturggling

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff

Tied up, 42-42. Tennessee's only lead, 2-0.

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff

Uh-oh, Angel was limping.

Kesmithstl1

uh-oh. Hope it's just a stinger!

Kansas opens the half aggressively again. Sutherland with a bucket, Gardner with a block.

Nwhawkfan

A little early to speculate, but how might a KU win affect Bonnie's future, which looked shaky before the tournament started?

Benton Smith KUsports.com staff in reply to Tom Keegan

Agreed. Jayhawks are confident. And unlike the men's team, they really are playing with house money.

Kesmithstl1 in reply to Kesmithstl1

ok, poorly worded, but you get the idea.

Rockchalk010

Are you guys at the game or just watching on TV?

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff

Halftime analyst Carolyn Peck said it comes down to whether Kansas can maintain its composure. I disagree. I think Kansas will maintain its composure, but can it stop Tennessee on the boards? Can Aishah Sutherland hit the defensive glass harder?

Kesmithstl1 in reply to Tom Keegan

well said Mr. Keegan. I encourage everyone to join you local Memory Walk!

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff in reply to Nwhawkfan

This needs to be said: Legendary Tennessee coach Pat Summitt has done a great service to Alzheimer's research by continuing to coach while slowed by the dreaded disease. It's obvious that assistant Holly Warlick is doing most of the coaching. Alzheimer's fund-raising is tough and Summitt has made it a little easier. I watched both of my parents suffer with it and one of my brothers. It's rough. Hats off to coach Summitt.

Angel Goodrich's remarkable NCAA Tournament run continues. She's showing an ESPN audience her great passing radar, her relentless driving ability, her long-range shooting and even her ability to rebound in traffic.

KU scoring: Goodrich 12, Aishah Sutherland and Chelsea Gardner 8, Tania Jackson 3, Monica Engelman and Natalie Knight 2.

Tennessee scoring: Shekinna Stricklen 9, Glory Johnson 8, Meighan Simmons 6, Taber Spani 3, Vicki Baugh 2, Alicia Manning 2.

KU's biggest lead was 26-12. Turnovers: Tennessee 6, Kansas 2. Rebounds: Tennessee 19, Kansas 16.

Nwhawkfan

I noticed they didn't interview Pat Summit at halftime. Given her illness, I wonder how much of her duties the assistant coaches have taken over, and how that affects the team.

Code_2008 in reply to Manginorh00lz

No, they did the WNIT Championship a few years ago. I think there was a December game they did at AFH 2 years ago as well.

Manginorh00lz

Is this the first live blog for a girl's game ever?

Nwhawkfan

Great half ladies!

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff

Vols dominating the offensive boards. It might time to bring more rebounding off the bench, even if it's at the guard spot. Asia Boyd has the talent to hang in game like this.

Hawk90

Is it just me or does this game look very similar to the Mens KU-Purdue game? Hot shooting to start but really struggling to get rebounds.

Maxbball11

I hope they bring this 30 second shot clock to the mens game.

Hawk90 in reply to Tjayhawk

O that makes sense, thank you!

Mom_of_three

I am impressed with Gardner. wow, what a future.

Nwhawkfan

Refreshing to watch a KU team not come out tight. We're playing like we have nothing to lose.

Tjayhawk in reply to Hawk90

The women do not have a 10 second rule for bringing the ball past half court. The shorter length of shot clock is the compromise for not having a 10 second rule for bringing the ball past half court.

Angel Goodrich 12 points, 5-6 shooting, three assists, no turnovers. Tennessee leading battle of the boards, 15-10. KU shooting 56 percent and has just one turnover. Aishah Sutherland, not hitting from the outside, needs to get closer to the hoop and focus on rebounding at both ends and that will get her going. Kansas not playing with the least bit of fear.

Hawk90 in reply to Code_2008

Men should take a page out of their book but good point.

Mom_of_three

Are the jayhawks allowing tennessee to get offensive rebounds, (and seemingly being less aggressive) to avoid foul trouble - knowing tennessee likes to rebound?

Hawk90 in reply to Matt Tait

So practically at least in my view, they point Angel on third team, that is a joke.

Code_2008 in reply to Hawk90

It's most likely to speed up Women's play.

Ku_meggan

Hi there. I've been trying to find the game online. Does anyone know where I could find it for free? Espn is not free for me because i live in Europe.

Mom_of_three

yeah, i thought engleman was pushed out of bounds.

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff in reply to Hawk90

Yep. Just five on the second team, though... It's weird. Angel was on the second team.

Hawk90

Why is the women's shot clock 30 and mens 35? Shouldn't be the other way?

Cshjhawk

That was a push against her!

Hawk90 in reply to Matt Tait

10 players? Do they have a second team?

Tennessee cuts into lead by hitting from long range and hitting the boards. Kansas has to do a better job of recovering onto Meighan Simmons, the Vols' shooter off the bench.

Hawk90

Sutherland needs to quit taking these quick shots. The Lady Vols have had a hard time defending the ball movement, can't get away from the game plan and let them back in.

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff in reply to Hawk90

I thought it was a joke that she didn't make first-team all-Big 12, especially because there are 10 players on that squad.... Angel is without question one of the top 10 players in the Big 12...

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff

KU athletic director Sheahon Zenger and chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little both in Des Moines for this one, just hours after being in St. Louis for the KU men's victory over NC State....

Eric Baker

I had no idea Goodrich led the nation in assists per game. She's so quick and mobile.

Hawk90 in reply to Matt Tait

I've been extremely impressed with her. She has great court vision and a great touch. I don't follow the women's game, but do you think that she is now the leading candidate for point guard of the year after this run in the tourney regardless of what happens today?

Kansas pumped its lead to 26-12. Angel Goodrich can't do anything wrong. She's too quick for Tennessee. The Vols have four turnovers, Kansas none.

This is awesome! I wasn't expecting this either, but I'm loving every second of it!

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff

If Angel keeps this up, every woman in America is going to go to the bun-behind-the-head look. She's going to change hairstyles the way Jackie O did, the way Jennifer Aniston did.

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff in reply to Hawk90

I say this with all seriousness, Angel is one of the most impressive basketball players I've ever covered... Just awesome. And she couldn't be a nicer person, too. Great to see her getting so much love and playing so well.
