Richmond at Kansas coverage

Kansas defeats Richmond, 87-59

  • 6 p.m., Dec. 18, 2012
  • Allen Fieldhouse, Lawrence, KS

FINAL: KU rolls over Richmond, 87-59

By Matt Tait.

Senior center Jeff Withey was aggressive on offense, dominant on defense and led the Kansas University men's basketball team to its third straight rout, this one a 87-59 victory against Richmond at Allen Fieldhouse.

Withey finished with 17 points, 13 rebounds and 4 blocks on 7-of-9 shooting in 26 minutes to lead the Jayhawks (9-1) in all three categories.

Withey was far from alone in the scoring display, as KU jumped out to another hot start behind red-shirt freshman Ben McLemore. McLemore opened the game with a three-pointer and scored 10 first-half points on 4-of-5 shooting. KU jumped out to leads of 13-6 and 33-11 and led 39-18 at halftime.

McLemore finished with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting and chipped in seven rebounds, also in 26 minutes.

Travis Releford added 11 points, Kevin Young chipped in with eight points and nine rebounds and Perry Ellis also added eight. Young and Ellis combined to shoot 8-of-9 from the floor.

One of the bright spots in this one came from sophomore point guard Naadir Tharpe, who finished with 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting (3-of-4 from three-point range) and added three rebounds, three assists, two steals and no turnovers in 17 minutes.

Here's a quick look back at some of the action.

The game turned when: With plenty of time for the Spiders to get back into this one, Withey slammed the door with, of all things, two steals and assists to Travis Releford to start the second half and push KU's lead to 25. The incredible thing about Withey's steals was that they came well beyond the three-point line, not in the paint.

Offensive highlight: With 17:40 to play in the first half and KU on one of its hot-start spurts, Elijah Johnson pushed the ball in transition, drove deep into the lane and dished a no-look pass off to Ben McLemore on his right. McLemore took it from there, flying high above the baseline for a two-handed jam.

Defensive highlight: Darien Brothers found out the hard way that there's more of a shot-blocking presence on this team than Jeff Withey. With 8:00 to play in the first half, Brothers drove left just outside of the lane and tossed up a floater while fading away. Jamari Traylor came from the other side of the lane and swatted the shot attempt out of bounds.

Key stat: The Jayhawks got 29 points off the bench to help bury the Spiders.

Up next: The Jayhawks will travel to Ohio State on Saturday for a 3 p.m. tipoff against the seventh-ranked Buckeyes in a rematch of last year's Final Four contest.

Brian Powell in reply to Brian Powell

you're playing at a high speed, but you're making decisions/moves like you're NEO in the Matrix. Unmatched flow :)

Brian Powell in reply to Ryan Mullen

like the Matrix

Jaybate

Tharpe had the best game of his career. This was the kind of line score Self has been hanging on for dear life with Naadir for.

Jaybate in reply to Brian Powell

Appears we saved our 3FG shooting at least. :-)

Duane Rice

That could be the worst post ever. I hope you were kidding.

Ryan Mullen in reply to Lindhawk

Ah gotcha.

Brian Powell

Fun to watch. Hope we saved some for Saturday!

Lindhawk in reply to Ryan Mullen

He's playing too fast. Trying to hard. Get in the flow of the game, quit trying to make it happen

Jeremy Wilhelm in reply to Jaybate

I agree :-)

Ryan Mullen in reply to Jaybate

Hoot, hoot, hoot, hoot, hoot.

Jaybate in reply to Farsidehawk

You're right to be positive about Rio. He will get it, if he will just stay.

Jaybate

Everyone's going to hoot at me for saying this, but if Tyler were to have a growth spurt and get up to 6'4" and stick with it to the bitter end the way Tyrel did with the body building, he might be able to play a little. But those are big ifs.

Jesse Newell

KU closes out the rout.

Ryan Mullen in reply to Lindhawk

Can you explain what, "when the game slows down" means? I have never quite understood what people are talking about.

Farsidehawk

Adams!

Jaybate

Tyler tripped on his catepillar there.

Jaybate in reply to Jesse Newell

Guys do this sometimes, when they think they are going to generate a few clips to show other schools. It never works out very well. Coaches recruit based on what they recall of you back in high school.

Farsidehawk

Tyler and his 'Stache in.

Lindhawk

Adams going to be a player when the game slows down for him

Jesse Newell in reply to Jaybate

Just said that to Tait. It's like he refuses to play organized basketball.

Rolland Remmert

Rio must have gotten a message from self about something

Brian Powell

YESSS.. Moar plz.

Cshjhawk in reply to Jaybate

HopefuLLy

Jaybate

Ooop, make that wild hare.

Farsidehawk

Adams showing what he can do!

Jaybate

Rio is doing a pretty good impression of a wild hair right now.

Cshjhawk

Rio!

Farsidehawk

Man, even when White misses, his shot looks good!

Brooksmd in reply to Jaybate

Tres Equiis?

Jaybate in reply to Farsidehawk

Totally agree. Someone needs to hack the scoreboard and add 5 minutes just for them.

Jaybate

Long ago in a youth mispent, I used to buy Tres Equiis. Do they still make that horrible stuff?

Farsidehawk in reply to Jaybate

The guys on the floor, especially Adams, White, and Tharpe need all the minutes possible.

Jaybate in reply to Cshjhawk

:-)

Cshjhawk in reply to Jaybate

Bit of sigmund!

Jaybate

Quartro Equiis = denatured alcohol

Mosshawk in reply to Cshjhawk

just messin

Cshjhawk in reply to Mosshawk

l next to the k. sorry

Jaybate in reply to Cshjhawk

I believe so too, but no time like the present to put the away and start climbing out.

Tharpe up to 11 points on 3-for-4 three-point shooting.

Cshjhawk in reply to Cshjhawk

hopefully

Brian Haase

wow tharpe is on fire

Duane Rice

Speaking of CBS will Gottlieb be calling and games or will he be in the studio.

Brian Powell

Tharpe is also hustling more on D now... too bad the O has to come first for him(?)

Mosshawk in reply to Cshjhawk

wow, filthy post...

Rolland Remmert in reply to Travis Warner

1st time he's been with a winner all year..........gotta be thankful he's away from the chiefs for a day

Jaybate

Ah ha! I got it. Self wants to win by 30 to make sure AW2 has bragging rights all over Virginia tomorrow.

Cshjhawk in reply to Jaybate

He's one of those guys who will come back next year and be productive. Hopefukky!

Jaybate

Tough for subs to get in this game. 33 point lead. 4:30 to go. Self seems to be making some kind of a point here.

Jesse Newell

Withey finishes with 17 points, 13 rebounds, four blocks.

Joe Satterwhite

I'm just glad the OSU game is on CBS and not ESPN so I don't have to hear Vitale's voice

Jaybate

Rio, do something positive.

Farsidehawk

Good to see Adams. Hope he gets to play through the end.

Farsidehawk

I don't remember having this much fun watching KU play this early in the season in a long time. This team is special and will only get better. Last year's team labored for a lot of wins. This one with machine like efficiency!

Travis Warner in reply to Jesse Newell

The only announcer that talks more about one school is Dicky V & Duke.

Lindhawk

I thought we would be good this year but I'm surprised how quickly we have figured it out

Jaybate

Team Spider's coach is thinking about a pastrami on rye, not about the game.

Jesse Newell in reply to Travis Warner

I don't think he's biased.

Joe Satterwhite in reply to Jaybate

Pause

Duane Rice in reply to Jaybate

Your good. you said handsome.

Jaybate

Looking at Joe D's face, one would think we were down 71-35.

Travis Warner in reply to Jesse Newell

How can he be considered unbiased? Why is he calling our games?

Jaybate

Pollard is actually starting to look handsome...no, I didn't say that, did I?

Jesse Newell in reply to Travis Warner

He might not be used to seeing a good team.

Jesse Newell in reply to Mosshawk

50 before tonight.

Travis Warner

I wish mitch holthus would stop talking

Jesse Newell

KU's run now at 16-2.

Jaybate

Self in the huddle: "Okay, guys, just stand around and let them come inside to Jeff 6 times so he can get 6 blocks and get this triple double thing out of the way."

Mosshawk in reply to Jesse Newell

how many blocks on the season?

Lindhawk

We are destroying these teams now.

Some good minutes from Tharpe here.

Duane Rice

Withey letting him get rebound just so he could get another block.

Brian Powell

Tharpe really turning it on.. love that he hasn't backed down! We really need him come March.

Jesse Newell

Good drive and dish by Tharpe. Withey gives the "wrap-it-up" sign that the Morris twins used to do.

Brian Haase

wow, we are lighting it up now

Farsidehawk

4

Jesse Newell in reply to Jesse Newell

Four now.

Jaybate

Pollard in a tie?

That's like seeing the Queen Alien in a bustier!!!

Jesse Newell in reply to Jaybate

Three.

Farsidehawk

Wow, what a pass by Tharpe!

Duane Rice

Best pass of the year.

Jesse Newell

Nice no-look pass by Tharpe there. Wow.

Jaybate in reply to Jesse Newell

For Jeff, I mean.

Jaybate in reply to Jesse Newell

What do your numbers say on blocks?

Jesse Newell

Withey up to 13 points and 13 boards.

Jaybate in reply to Jesse Newell

I can just hear Vitale.

"Oh, KU is shooting to many lay-ups."

Jesse Newell

The drummer for the band "Fun" is here. Evidently, he's a KU grad. Who knew?

Jaybate

I want to see the Dos Equis guy live a little.

Mud wrestling Ellen Degeneres.

Facing down a T-Rex in Jurassic Park.

Etc.

Jesse Newell in reply to Jesse Newell

Almost two-thirds of KU's points have been layups/dunks.

Joe Satterwhite

Early thoughts and predictions on the OSU game anyone?

KU with 20 layups/dunks. Richmond with two.

Jaybate

Jelly finally found a guy light enough he could rattle the fillings on with a pick. Their PG.

Farsidehawk

Another great one by Trav!

Cshjhawk

great pass

Jesse Newell

More dunks/layups.

Farsidehawk

What a feed by BMAC!

Cshjhawk

great pass

Jaybate

Just a great pass to Jelly

Jesse Newell

More layups for KU.

Jaybate

If the prophet were to find his shooting game for, say, three rounds in March, this team could do some damage.

Jaybate in reply to Jaybate

That Yup was to Jesse regarding Belmont's KenPom's
