Belmont at Kansas coverage

Kansas defeats Belmont, 89-60

  • 6 p.m., Dec. 15, 2012
  • Allen Fieldhouse, Lawrence, KS

Hot shooting, tough defense lead KU to 89-60 rout of Belmont

Four KU players reached double figures, including 17 apiece from Ben McLemore and Travis Releford, as Kansas improved to 8-1 with a dominant, 89-60 home victory over out-manned Belmont.

Ben McLemore missed just once, Travis Releford just three times and Andrew White III and Jeff Withey joined them in double figures to lead the Kansas University men’s basketball team to a dominant 89-60 victory against visiting Belmont on Saturday night.

McLemore finished 6-of-7 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from three-point range and Releford just could not stop dunking as he finished 6-of-9 and tied with McLemore for the team scoring lead.

Withey hit 5-of-10 shots and finished with 14 points and White logged legitimate minutes and added 15 points, on 6-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-5 from downtown.

Kevin Young, in another start, delivered eight points and a team-best six rebounds. Johnson, McLemore, Releford and Traylor all picked up five boards.

The Jayhawks led by more than 40 points at one point and were able to check the famed “red team” into the game with three minutes remaining.

Here’s a quick look back at some of the action.

• The game turned when: Kansas responded to Belmont bringing the lead within six (27-21) with a 17-7 run to close the first half. Ben McLemore made sure the Jayhawks went into the locker room on a high note with a slam dunk over Blake Jenkins as the buzzer sounded. McLemore was fouled, hit the free throw and KU led 44-28 at the break.

• Offensive highlight: With 9:17 to play in the first half, sophomore point guard Naadir Tharpe chased down his own miss, gathered himself, attacked the paint and threw a perfect over-the-shoulder lob to Jeff Withey who slammed it home to give KU a 23-12 lead.

• Defensive highlight: Let’s give this one to Kevin Young for his steal with 14:38 to play in the game that started a two-on-one break with Travis Releford and led to an and-one conversion from Releford on the other end. Young was active against a dribbler at the top of the key and then hustled after the loose ball to force the action.

• Key stat: How about three-point shooting.... Belmont can be a giant killer when it’s hitting the outside shot. Not only were the Bruins missing, but the Jayhawks were on fire. KU finished 10-of-21 from downtown (47.6 percent) while Belmont hit 8-of-38 (21.1 percent) from three-point range.

• Up next: The Jayhawks will take on Richmond, Tuesday, Dec. 18 at 6 p.m. at Allen Fieldhouse.

Ah, you were great! So were the rotation Jayhawks. Rock Chalk!

Wissox, going out to dinner no excuse for showing up late. Need to plan better. lol

Sorry but Niko needs to be the LAST walk-on off the bench.

Kye Clark

Someone please calm Dannylanduff down. Complaining about the walk-ons being in is ridiculous. No one cares about 100 points, but I guarantee you the rotation players take great pride in putting the game away early enough to get those guys some minutes

Good show Matt. RC!

Lajayhawk in reply to Matt Tait

Nice job filling in tonight. :)

FINAL SCORE: KU rocks Belmont, 89-60, in a game that wasn't even that close. The Jayhawks improve to 8-1 and Belmont drops to 7-3.

Take that, mid-major that starts with a B.

Thanks Matt, good night Jayhawks til next one!

Bwag in reply to Brooksmd

Mine has stayed strong throughout.

Melrank in reply to Matt Tait

Thanks for playing, Matt!

Matt Tait staff

Thanks for going easy on me tonight, everyone. Hope the experience was all right. We'll have the regular assortment of stuff posted ASAP including Bill Self audio, the ratings and all of our game coverage as soon as it's available. Impressive win. Enjoy your night!

Daniel Kennamore

One basket over the last 6 game minutes? Inexcusable no matter what string is in.

Brian Haase

well i spoke too soon, don't think we're making it to the century mark. Oh well, to me that means we beat them even worse!

Matt Tait staff

Rock Chalk chant starting to ring out and the Jayhawks are a minute away from moving to 8-1 on the season with another pretty complete effort.

If RIO is playing this "uninterested" in practice, no wonder he's in the doghouse.

Oh well game over. ESPN stream going down the toilet.

Daniel Kennamore

Wow. Our third string couldn't beat a div III school. Just awful.

Wow! Big 0 looks like that one kid who hit puberty way faster than all the other kids.

Maxjay in reply to Daniel Kennamore

Tempting as it may be, I would rather get the benchers some practice and experience. Will help us in the post season! :P

Daniel Kennamore

they can't even hold onto the ball...

Lajayhawk in reply to Quinn

Ah, yes, I think it was draftexpress I looked at.

Daniel Kennamore

Ugh. Our third string is awful.

I just wanted 100. We are the only top 10 team without such a score.

Matt Tait staff

Rio Adams, Christian Garrett, Evan Manning and Tyler Self just checking in at the 2:52 mark.

Lajayhawk in reply to Bwag

15 according to ESPN. Sometimes they are late updating, though.

Quinn in reply to Lajayhawk

Draftexpress still has him down at 17. But yeah he is at #3 on

Giant size Barkley.

I'm not getting posterized - Roberts

Lajayhawk in reply to Melrank

He should be top 5. Just thought the boards were late putting him there.

How many is that for White?

Melrank in reply to Lajayhawk

I saw a mock with him at 5 last week.

Brian Powell in reply to Melrank

Good question; there was a time when it seemed he was competing with Tharpe for the other PG spot... but now it seems like it's all Tharpe.

I like Rio's energy and D though -- you can't coach speed. Would love to see more of him this year.

It will be fun to see how we play once we climb up the ladder.

Lajayhawk in reply to Quinn

Wow, seriously?? They must have just updated that. I'm pretty sure I checked that a week ago and he was late first round. Maybe it was a different board....

I haven't been on here tonight, but does anyone know why Anrio isn't playing

Zabudda in reply to Maxjay

I think that is very insightful.

Melrank in reply to Quinn

3? Meh - one more year!

I like the fact that we are ranked where we are ranked..we play so much more freely.

Quinn in reply to Matt Tait has BMac as the #3 overall draft pick right now. He's playing like it tonight.

It's all about the subs now with KU on cruise control and headed toward victory No. 8.

Daniel Kennamore

Seriously Self, put the starters back in. Give the fans the 100 points we deserve.

That was a big-boy rebound by Jamari Traylor. He just snatched that away.

Lajayhawk in reply to Matt Tait

We can start the chanting now!!

Is that Josh Smith that just checked in for Belmont?

Anyone else smelling a double digit effort from Tyler Self tonight?

Daniel Kennamore in reply to Brian Haase

Not with the third string...

Maxjay in reply to Brian Powell

The team is growing up so fast...

Matt Tait staff

Perry Ellis checks in for BMac.... The freshman finished with 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting, 4 for 5 from three-point range. Another insanely solid night.

My nephew wants to go to Belmont, I might show him tape of this game before he decides.

Maxjay in reply to Matt Tait

Hey Matt! Any new gossips in conference realignment lately?

Brian Powell

wow, so many good things to see tonight:

EJ back to his old self Withey continuing, BMac still shooting, KY and Rele still making plays...

but Tharpe stepping up a little! and AW3 finding his KU shot!

still want to see a little more from Ellis/Traylor

Is RIO in the doghouse?

The big O

Lajayhawk in reply to Wissoxfan83

Runs in the family. ;)

Brian Haase in reply to Daniel Kennamore

likely gonna make it! 13 points in 5:30? it better happen!

Wissoxfan83 in reply to Lajayhawk

You're good at math!

Matt Tait staff

Check that. Niko Roberts in for EJ and Traylor in for Withey.

Seriously... we're up by 41 points right now.... Y.I.K.E.S.

Brian Haase

This team is really coming together.... ohio state best be ready

Daniel Kennamore

All I want for X-mas is 100 points.

Matt Tait staff

On the floor for KU: Tharpe, McLemore, Withey, White III and EJ. 5:30 to play.

Lajayhawk in reply to Bwag

Second game in a row where we played with a lot of energy and as a team. This run we went on reminds me of 96-97 team...

Block Chalk Jayhawk

Who is this White guy?

Matt Tait staff

Releford checks out to a HUGE ovation from the home crowd. He finished with 17 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Great night.

Wissoxfan83 in reply to Brian Haase

Reverse psychology?

I am loving this I seeing a smart team?

Matt Tait staff in reply to Brian Haase

Hard to believe, huh? Belmont 6-of-31 from three-point land and KU 10-of-16.

Lajayhawk in reply to Matt Tait

No probs. :)

Lajayhawk in reply to Brian Haase

We're becoming kinda good....

Maxjay in reply to Lajayhawk

Oh cool! Congratulations to Jesse family!

Matt Tait staff in reply to Lajayhawk

Brian Haase

sooooo let me get this straight... this was supposed to be our toughest competition left at home?

Lajayhawk in reply to Maxjay

At his sister's graduation.

Maxjay in reply to Matt Tait

Jesse out tonight?

Rolland Remmert in reply to Wissoxfan83

He suddenly became a fan instead of a player

Yeah, that was pretty stupid by EJ.

8-0 run by the Jayhawks officially delivers the knockout blow. Not that there was any doubt before it, but the KU fans really made Belmont feel like they're suffering a beating during this latest spurt.

Maxjay in reply to Matt Tait

EJ, not that it matters a whole lot, but goodness!

Matt Tait staff

OK. Now it's loud. Back-to-back threes and a reverse dunk by Relefrod plus an and-one opportunity by the KC senior... This place is beside itself with joy. KU up 83-46 with 6:39 to play. Wow. Just wow.

Why EJ? That was going in.

No stare down?

Daniel Kennamore

Gives me a hundred, I wants it.

Now, this is getting fun!

Wanted a windmill right there.......... :)

3 for 3 for III

III for 3. 3-3.

Withey's gonna regret that block
