FINAL: KU rushing attack shines in 42-24 victory over McNeese State

The Kansas football team showed off its revamped rushing game on Saturday, posting 55 carries for 301 yards (5.5 yards per carry) in a 42-24 victory over McNeese State at Memorial Stadium.

It was the first time KU surpassed 300 yards rushing since the 2008 season.

James Sims led KU, carrying it 19 times for 104 yards and a touchdown.

In their first collegiate games, Tony Pierson added five carries for 73 yards and a score, while Darrian Miller had 13 rushes for 63 yards.

Jordan Webb was efficient at quarterback, completing 7 of 10 passes for 146 yards and three touchdowns.

Two of those scores went to true freshman JaCorey Shepherd, who had three catches for 107 yards.

Defensively, Steven Johnson had 15 tackles, while Toben Opurum had 11.

After the game, KU coach Turner Gill said that receiver Daymond Patterson had a groin injury and, at this point, was doubtful for next week's game.

KU (1-0) will play host to Northern Illinois at 6 p.m. on Sept. 10.

For your dinner tomorrow: Fried Crow Can either fry on the bone or filet the meat. To tenderize the meat you need to cook in a pressure cooker for 15 minutes at 10 pounds, or boil in water with a tablespoon of salt until tender, to being stuck with a fork. Remove the crow breast or filets from the pressure cooker or boiling pot. Flour and shallow fry in a pan until golden brown. Enjoy!

Lol, even when we win you lose your bet! Gotta love it.

ahpersecoachingexperience 8 years, 5 months ago

Should of seen me during the cu game last year. I hand the winnings already spent at halftime, and you know the rest...

Joseph Kuebel 8 years, 5 months ago

I cannot blame u for that. God himself didn't see that one coming. Da BEARS! Bears 88, GOD 2. Your tough love reminds me of a Chicagoan (negative, hopeless but pretty fair)

Colorado is your favorite team after that one, eh? Can't imagine the flack you got the last half hour thru the end of that game.

Mike Kendall 8 years, 5 months ago

Colorado is being taken to the woodshed at beautiful Hawaii, as I am posting this--ha, ha!

Now Colorado is making a comeback---might be eating crow before the game ends!

Mike Kendall 8 years, 5 months ago

It looked like Toben was hurt at the end of the game---or, was it just that he was tired?

KUs run d was ok not good. Terrible against the screens gotta fix that sh$t. Run offense looks strong , anxious to see how we run against a better team

Kenny Terry 8 years, 5 months ago

The speed of the freshmen is awesome. Great win Jayhawks

I just looked at the box score for NIU-Army. Looks like NIU has a very strong running game in addition to a formidable passing game. They had 300+ on the ground, 220 in the air with a long run of 57 and long pass of 58 (ish). So definitely a strong opponent next week.

The bright side?

They gave up 401 yards to ARMY

Mangino_Maniac 8 years, 5 months ago

Exactly... and 331 of those yards were on the ground (by Army). If Army can do that much damage, we will do even more.

Our D is going to have to make some major adjustments though before next week.

Nathan Anderson 8 years, 5 months ago

It helps when the other team's DL weigh an average of 235#.

texashawk10 8 years, 5 months ago

Army runs the triple option that Navy, Air Force, and Georgia Tech run. That offense is going to gain lots of yardage because of the misdirection element. Remember that KU gave up nearly 300 yards to GT last year in what was generally considered a good defensive performance in that game.

Joseph Kuebel 8 years, 5 months ago

Yea, all signs point to a shootout. If the over under is 40, it looks like it'll be in the books by halftime... all though the ground game grinds the clock so there's a chance it may take until 5 minutes past the half.

If we win this next game we will have a shot at being decent this year- well a chance anyway. If we lose tho... I don't see us having a fun time especially cuz we will be playing 6 games against the south (Hey, jayhawkinnbr! We will play 33% more games vs the south this year than Mangino won versus south opponents in 8 years!- F@_GET IT JayHAWKS!) Win 2 versus the former south and we are halfway to silencing the lardheads!

Ludwig Supraphonic 8 years, 5 months ago

Jayhawkinnebr returns and apersecoachingexperience never leaves. Loyal fans to the end; they know how to celebrate a victory

Joseph Kuebel 8 years, 5 months ago

+1 Lol! Maybe we will win more then 4 games against the south under Gill, but that information won't be brought up will it? Haters gonna hate, and suckers gonna suck!

Rock Chalk baby! Not bad. Improvement is all we should expect until our team finally plays a full roster of Gill recruits. Til then Il laugh at the racist attacks by qausi-fans that likes to ignore the truth. Everyone with an IQ over 80 or a brain in their head that considers themself a fan can continue to be clowns and make foolish remarks.

jhawk2003 8 years, 5 months ago

While the defense was bad, it does look like this team is much better than last year. Patmon is the only cornerback who tries to make a play on the ball. On a positive note, the offense looked explosive at times. I'm excited for next week!

Joseph Kuebel 8 years, 5 months ago

Lol jayhawkinnbr: "Mangino doesn't have a job because people discriminate against fat people". Kinda like Mangino discriminates against black people?

Jayhawkknbr: "Where are the players that Gill recruited"... Lol. He had a good class considering he had limited time to recruit. Cuz freshmen start all the time right?

Under Mangino we woulda lost 11+ plus players that planned on tranferring, I'm sure recruits woulda been REaL impressed with that! I'm sure we woulda been able to go 0-7 after that and I'm sure we woulda won 4 games against B12 south opponents in 8 yrs too, too, right?

We had 1 good year under fatty. But again good try. The fat guy is gone, get over it... And apply some knowledge to your statements. We are in a much better situation now than we would be in had if we kept fat@$$. Where are the recruits? Really? Gill in his first year had a better recruiting class than we had in 8 yrs under the lard, numbers don't lie. Quit fantasizing and think critically not nostalgically. It's not even a question that we were going nowhere but downhill with him, but maybe if u keep complaining we get him back- cuz its doin a lot of good isn't it?

Andy Tweedy 8 years, 5 months ago

The play-by-play guys made the comment that Willis was overpursuing and missing tackles. I didn't see the game, why couldn't we stop MSU? Was the entire defense that awful or was it just the linebackers? Pass rush? Glad to see a running game though, ran the ball all over the field!!!

Joseph Kuebel 8 years, 5 months ago

Ya, I'm sure tackling will be a key emphasis this week. Looked like we in the right spots and just couldn't bring the ball carrier down. Granted their McNeese's runningback wasn't a scrub, but we can't expect to do so well the rest of the way if we repeat this performance.

shepdog 8 years, 5 months ago

Did Brandon Bourbon get to play? I thought he was listed as #2 on the depth chart and all the other backs had more stats.

eastcoasthawk 8 years, 5 months ago

The offense provides some hope. The defense certainly doesn't. Our LB's (besides Steven Johnson and I wouldn't call Opurum a LB), corners and safeties were taking bad angles and when they did get to the ball carrier couldn't wrap them up. Horrible open field tackling. It's gonna be the season we expect.

Also, RIP Coach Fam. Didn't hear about him until just before the game and was extremely surprised that the radio team didn't talk about him during the game.

ahpersecoachingexperience 8 years, 5 months ago

And how is that deal with lettin UT broadcast our game with them on the tln working for you now?!?!?

How many times can I say "told you so" until you will listen to me the first time I say something?

riverdrifter 8 years, 5 months ago

Three more wins but I don't know where they'll get them. They don't hit much nor block nor tackle.

Tony Bandle 8 years, 5 months ago

For a team many said wouldn't win a game, let's forego style points and look at the positives: 1] We beat a team we were supposed to beat. 2] We scored six..count 'em..six touchdowns. 3] We have a lot of freshman who have talent and speed, just need experience 4]Almost half the teams in America [including Notre Dame, TCU and Oregon lost this weekend....we didn't. 5] Next week's opponent can't stop the run...and running is what we do best. 6] Now we have Coach Fam looking over us from above. 7] Missouri and Kansas State sucked today. 8] The defensive weaknesses were made obvious without losing the game...fix them!!

waywardJay 8 years, 5 months ago

And we didn't force a single turnover, and spoiled field positiontwice if memory serves.

Mike Kendall 8 years, 5 months ago

Not a bad game for KU tonight on offense, but the defense is what most people feared it would be.

Jordan Webb had a nice game. He made some good throws tonight and didn't put the ball into any really dangerous situations. He needs to continue to be a game manager for KU and the offense should be fine against most teams this year.

James Sims was solid tonight, nothing special out of him. Miller and Pierson were impressive in their debuts, and Bourbon had a nice run. KU's running game was much more impressive out of spread formations than it was in the I-formation.

Jacory Shepherd looks like he could be a deep threat for KU. That dude is blazing fast.

The OLine was good tonight. Webb had time to throw and they were opening up some nice running lanes today for the backs.

Overall, I'd give the offense a B+. The situation at the end of the first half was a little messed up, but KU did get a TD in the end on that.

The defense was another issue today.

The run defense wasn't bad when McNeese was going with the tradition running game. I was actually impressed with how the DLine played tonight, they were getting consistent pressure on the QB and holding the line pretty well.

The LB's were not so good tonight. They did a poor job on QB containment for the most part and could've had several picks if they realized McNeese was running the same play on basically every third down. All they had to do was drift into the passing lanes and there were picks to be had all game long.

The safeties definitely showed their inexperience today getting burned on play action multiple times and generally taking poor angles to the sidelines. The corners did a good job in coverage for the most part, but couldn't tackle to save their lives.

Defense gets a C- tonight. The play of the DLine is the only thing keeping this grade from being a D.

Based on what happened around the country over the last couple of days, I would say KU's looking like a 3-4 win team this season like most people expect. KSU and ISU both were very lucky to win against FCS teams. I don't know who a fourth win would come against at this point, but I just have a feeling that KU is going to play an A+ type game against someone other than KSU and ISU and beat them.

waywardJay 8 years, 5 months ago

Thank you for point out the D-line play, because I was about to destroy you on that. Fpr the most part our Run Defense was very solid... A few missed tackles, but under 100 yards pm over 30 carries.... For a unit that is considered ( not only injury depleted ) but under-performing, Our D-line played pretty stout tonight.

I want to think we basically decided to show our simplest defensive set..... I want to think it was designed to show only cover 2 looks this week ( even more impressed with the defense line considered we barely ever blitzed and held down a couple FCS transfer runningbacks...... I don't know this to be true, but I think it is true... and that's what I'm pinning my hopes on....

I said coming into this year that Tyler Patmon might be the best Corner on our team, and I'm not sure why he isn't starting. He's got the best techinique and seems to attack the ball correctly....

I am sincerely hoping that Bakare and Willis were so Jacked for this game it lost their heads, because they were running wreckless... I think the longer the game went the more Willis started getting his stuff together but I do not recall once hearing Bakare's name.... I remember hearing Steven Johnson's name and TOben Opurum's name. I heard quite a bit of Praise for WIlliams augustino and Young...... ANd McNeese wasn't exactly Small on the offensive line......

Our Safeties and corners will come around ( most of us thought this wa sa strength of our defense... Which could be a terrible omen.... ) Just hope this was a game we chose to keep our cards close to our chest.

waywardJay 8 years, 5 months ago

Ummm That was a larger Offensive line that I thought. I checked the ESPN Rosters for their Dt's and there weight was pretty even on our guys..... Granted, Wait and see.. there will be better lines we play against, but I don't think that was the excuse people will make it out to be.

fromthatstandpoint 8 years, 5 months ago

There were 10 TFL's. That is not bad. They held the MSU to less than 3 yards per carry. That's not bad either. It sounds like the problems were of the correctable type rather than the not athletic enough type. Guess we'll see as the season progresses.

parrothead8 8 years, 5 months ago

The running game was solid against an inferior opponent, but this team needs to be able to throw to win games this season, and they didn't exactly prove they could do that tonight. Webb only attempted 10 passes all game, and 129 of his 147 yards came on the three TD passes. That's not going to win many Big 12 games.

fromthatstandpoint 8 years, 5 months ago

They were getting over seven yards per carry. There were only two punts and one turnover on downs. When they did pass they had a passing efficiency rating of 291.64 with 30% of the throws going for touchdowns. Just WTF do you want anyway?

jayhawkintx73 8 years, 5 months ago

He only threw the ball 10 times, completed 70% of them, and 3 of them for TDs. Two of them were to a freshman.

The thing I liked the most about it is they went down field, and not a stupid wide receiver screen pass 4 out of every 5 pass plays. McNeese State is not a slow team, and they played with LSU into the 4th quarter a year ago. LSU won that game 31 - 10, but the score at the end of 3 quarters was 22-10. LSU won the game 32-10 and LSU was rated number 9 in the country and unbeaten.

McNeese is a team that would have beaten 3 Big 12 teams on Saturday.

You make one good point about balance, but we didn't need that in this game. 7 of 10, 3 TD passes, plus Webb ran for a 4th TD. The playbook was hardly even opened this week.

Oh yeah, Patterson left in the first half and didn't return and we didn't have Omigie and one other receiver for this game. One is injured and will play next week and the other was suspended and will play next week. I'm telling you right now, I wouldn't want to be NIU or Georgia Tech right now and have to prepare for this team's running attack with threats on the outside like Patterson, Shepherd, and Omigie. Shepherd doesn't take long to get open, and he'll be able to make a lot of big runs after the catch.

We hardly used the Tight Ends on Saturday and we didn't play a wide open offense and put up 450 yards of offense. This was just the first game.

As far as our defense goes, they grew in the second half and got better. I am quite pleased with this win. Some of the players that McNeese State has are transfers from the likes of Michigan State and they were not slow.

Of course, McNeese State is a team we should have beaten. This was not a disappointment to me. These players were ready to play football, and a couple of our running backs are flat out burners. Georgia Tech is slower than McNeese State at the skill positions.

Geekinout 8 years, 5 months ago

Dear KU student section,

PLEASE QUIT SAYING "HOME OF THE CHIEFS" at the end of the NATIONAL ANTHEM! You are basically desecrating Americas fight song while at the same time giving a shoddy Missouri product undeserved props. Go do that at a Mizzou Tigers game tards.

jayhawkintx73 8 years, 5 months ago

I think that this win is more substantial than many fans want to believe. McNeese is far better than the North Dakota team Kansas lost to a year ago. Kansas is far better than they were a year ago.

Sure, the defense showed inexperience tonight, but they did not show that there wasn't any talent. McNeese State has speed and would have beaten Kansas State and Iowa State tonight. McNeese State would beat some Division I teams, and this Kansas team is underrated, and that is probably a good thing right now. This team is young, talented, fast, and will get better than this.

Jordan Webb only threw the ball ten times, completed 7 of them, and 3 of them were for TDs. Kansas had two wide receivers held out of the game and a true freshman caught two TD passes. This team won't win a conference championship this year, but if they improve and build from this the rest of this season, KU will be in a Bowl Game this year. Next year, they'll be mentioned in Conference Championship talk.

Texas Tech, Missouri(looked awful today), Kansas State, and Iowa State are not as good as Kansas is right now. Missouri is completely overrated and I thought they were before today's game.

These guys on defense will get better. I have confidence in that. 7 - 5 is likely with this offense. The defense improves a little each game, and 9-3 is not out of the question for this year.
