FINAL: Elijah Johnson's career day lifts KU to 72-56 victory over UCLA

Elijah Johnson scored a career-high 23 points, leading the Kansas men's basketball team to a 72-56 victory over UCLA on Tuesday night at the Maui Invitational.

Johnson — whose previous career-high was 15 points against Oklahoma State on Feb. 21, 2011 — made 8 of 13 field goals and 4 of 8 three-pointers. The four made threes also tied a career high.

UCLA closed the deficit to 61-56 with 4:33 left before the Jayhawks ended the game on an 11-0 run.

Thomas Robinson contributed 15 points (7-for-11 shooting) and 10 rebounds, while Tyshawn Taylor added 13 points and six assists.

KU (3-1) will play Duke in the Maui Invitational championship game at 9 p.m. central on Wednesday.

If last nights game is a precursor to how EJ will play with more playing time - LOOKOUT!

Releford played great last night!

Can't wait for the game tonight!

We are safe from Vitale, but we need Withey out there for 25-30 minutes tomorrow night, he can cause real problems for Duke and there's so much potential for him and TRob in the post if they can be out there together more

Guards are also gonna have to play against a big stable of guards and stay out of foul trouble

Great job filling it up tonight by EJ, everybody had their moments making plays on offense. Everybody has to keep looking to score every night, you never know when it's gonna be your night and for some of the guys that needs to be a lot of nights.

The way KU is getting whistled against everyone else, throw in the Duke effect and we may run out of players.

Typical Bill Self team...wear themselves out preventing a comeback only to have to face real competition the next day.

I know he's a Dukie, but I would rather have Bilas call our game than Dick Vi-tool.

I think we saw this last year. Get big lead. Blow big lead. Still close out game for win. We need a killer instinct. That being said I think we look better than I anticipated with this many new players. Says alot about HCBS. Take notes Gill.

Beat the Dookies!!

Duke plays dirty. Those guys are a bunch of c**ts. Looking forward to being the first blemish on their Maui experience. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

Self even said after the UCLA game, "To be quite honest, we wanted to play Duke. Be careful what you wish for, but we wanted to play Duke."

Hey, play great against the Dukies, Coach! Rock Chalk Jayhawk and good luck Wednesday.

Also, I didn't realize we've only won Maui once....1996. Let's get a second one! Duke already has friggin four.

Not many seasons we can say that we played UCLA, Kentucky and Duke within the first 5 or so games......

And we've got Ohio State later!

Our cup runneth over.

What is the Kansas record for largest lead blown in a loss? Is it still the 20-point lead we blew against Arizona in 2003? We came deadly close to tying that record tonight. But I'm glad we had the fortitude to withstand UCLA's rally and pull away. Eerily similar to the 2008 Final Four game against North Carolina, no?

As for Mizzou, they hit their free throws, playing 4 guards it appears.... that could cause fits against teams with the talent of their lead 4 guards, but Depth will be a concern.
