Sadly, Howard did not have the most turnovers in a game this year. They did, however, almost break the top 100....

Hard not to look past ND. Can't wait for conference ball though. Love this time of year....for college hoops anyway. Good night all. rock chalk!!

9 points for Merv, thats nice, were they mostly treys

    1. jaybate (anonymous) replies

4-6 with one trey. He showed me something tonight.

He's very, very young physically, but he must be growing, because they've got him playing on the blocks. With what Self called a very good trey stroke, this kid could turn into a real sleeper. He was 6-7 when they signed him and he looked an inch, or two taller out there. I could see Hudy working him steadily up in strength the next two seasons and Merv at 6'8 and 220 with a killer stroke from three being a contributor. I know everyone is down on him, but, really, if Self is not inundated with 4-5 stars wanting to come play guard come late signing period, then Merv is a project worth keeping. He could develop into one of those baby faced assassin types.

    Good news:

Despite practicing two-a-days, the team looked pretty active; that shows major progress in conditioning.

Good defense except in transition, which there wasn't much of, fortunately.

Elijah was 1-5, while TT and Conner were combined 6 of 9; this means Elijah will be ready for a break out game soon, when the other two shoot back to their averages.

KU rediscovered the disruption statistic: 11 strips/13TOs.

Travis had another Brady game and proved he can drive over the top and down the lane a la TT last year. This is big, even though he only did it once. He will do it a lot during the conference run.

Justin is way low on the radar screen right now, but that is because he has proven he can guard the post, and Self is working KY to see if he can round him into some kind of a contributor.

    Bad News:

Worst news is another lousy FT shooting game--63.6%.

Withey just cannot get untracked as a rebounder.

TRob and Withey never made it to the line. Amazing. Clearly Self was working on other things, but this was an underwhelming performance by both bigs.

Naadir combined three TOs with three straight defensive botches when he came in and succeeded in somehow playing worse than he has in the past.

Kevin Young is one of those guys that drive coaches nuts. He is very productive on his line score, but when his minutes go up, he makes TOs and cannot seem to stop the blow bys.

      Jaybate,

      I usually skip your post as they tend to be long and nonsensical. Since this post was relatively short, I thought I would give it a try;
      ---
"Elijah was 1-5, while TT and Conner were combined 6 of 9; this means Elijah will be ready for a break out game soon, when the other two shoot back to their averages"

Actually Elijah was 4 of 9 and TT and Conner were 8 of 13. The figures that you quoted were for 3 point shots, but you do not seem to think it is important to mention this fact.
      --
-"Withey just cannot get untracked as a rebounder"

Withey is averaging 6.1 RPG playing 22 MPG, second only to Robinson who is averaging 11.4 in 30.8 MPG. I would say Withey's numbers are pretty good. As a comparison, the third leading rebounder on the team is Releford who averages 3.5 RPG in 29.4 MPG.
      ---
"TRob and Withey never made it to the line. Amazing."

Robinson was 1 of 2 and Withey 2 of 2 from the line.
      ---
"Naadir combined three TOs with three straight defensive botches when he came in and succeeded in somehow playing worse than he has in the past."

To put in context you should mention that he also had 5 assists, 1 steal and no personal fouls in 17 minutes. His performance looks quit a bit better when you provide all the information, doesn't it?
      ---
"Kevin Young is one of those guys that drive coaches nuts. He is very productive on his line score, but when his minutes go up, he makes TOs and cannot seem to stop the blow bys."

Kevin Young had also 1 assist and 3 steal to go with his 7 points in 18 minutes. Considering that Howard scored a grand total of 34 points, there was not much of a chance of many "blow bys;" I do not recall anyone "blowing by" KY in this game. Facts are a b_i_t_c_h, aren't they?

Please do not post crap just for the sake of posting; it wastes bandwidth and annoys the other posters. I guess I will go back to skipping your posts.

        FanToo,
I think you're missing Jaybate's read between the numbers thinking. I knew what he meant with Elijah's 1-5 and TT+Conner=6of9. I saw the game too, and appreciate his insights. I may not always agree with JB, but there's no need to be rude to JB or other fans here because you don't agree, like or understand. While your data output may be impressive, you're seeing the trees, and not the forest. Be nice to fellow men. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.

        1. JayHawkFanToo (anonymous) replies

I disagree. He used the numbers that would fit his point, rather than the numbers that tell the entire story.
Jaybate is entitled to his own opinion; however, he is not entitled to his own facts.
Fact are what they are. If you can use them to support your theory, great. If the numbers do not support your conclusion, then do not make up fact or twist the numbers to fit your conclusions; it is called spin...we have enough of that in politics, we do not need that in a friendly sports board, don't you agree?
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you as well.

      3. HighEliteMajor (anonymous) replies

JayHawkFanToo: On two points, - Withey is a subpar rebounder for his size and position -- 5 spot. He starts with a built in advantage by playing down low on the offensive end, and guarding the post on the defensive end. What I see .. he gets pushed out, takes poor angles, and doesn't seem to bust his tail for rebounds. Rebounds per minute played .. TRob .370; KY .342; Withey .274; Wesley .206. That being said, I think Withey is better than I expected overall.

On Tharpe, remember the blow-by to the hoop right in front of the bench where the Howard guard dished under the bucket? I'm a proponent of giving Tharpe PT, but his defense ... the thing that Self will want from him to get real PT ... is lacking so far. I wish it wasn't.

  5. thebcman (anonymous) says…

Nice job, Tyshawn .. 5 assists, 1 turnover .. hope that kind of play continues.

    1. LAJayhawk (anonymous) replies

He had 9 dimes versus 2 TOs against USC as well.

  6. oldalum (anonymous) says…

Jaybate: I saw Withey at the free throw line, and I believe he made them all. How did you miss that?

  7. oldalum (anonymous) says…

I meant to mention that the Jaybate criticism of the free throw shooting was also misleading. Although the final was low, the starters plus Teahan made 12 of 14. Most of the misses came when the bench was on the floor. I have to wonder if he even watched this game.

  8. memhawk (anonymous) says…

Just how much does a school like Howard get paid to come into AFH for such a beating?

Secondly, was anybody else as impressed as I was with that family on the unicycles at halftime? That was pretty cool!

  9. HighEliteMajor (anonymous) says…

Anyone see the 3/4 court trap .. we stole 2 or 3 possessions with it .. led to 4 points I can recall. I was at the game, so I did miss some stuff I usually rewind with the DVR. Interesting that this is the exact time we pulled out the press last season. Christmas break vs. UMKC I think.

I'm going to ride Jaybate's coattails a bit here .. he hit on some good points.

JB's post above about KY. Agree he can drive a coach nuts a bit defensively. But the guy brings energy, athleticism, and he attacks the boards. He hustles. He is a natural rebounder. Withey should take notes.

I will have to watch the game again, but it appeared Withey is simply getting no position down low. I mentioned this in prior posts. Is anyone seeing what I'm seeing? Where Aldrich or Kieff would establish themselves, Withey just won't (or can't). In prior games, it just seems that there is no postfeed to make many times. While we are clearly not better defensively with KY and TRob at the 4 and 5, we are better offensively I think. KY up high, TRob low. And KY is a better rebounder than Withey. Something to think about.

And on Tharpe .. can't argue with Jaybate's take here. Disappointing really. The defensive lapses are the most obvious when you compare to how TT and EJ were guarding. All Self can do is give him minutes when he can and see if the guy can improve. Not wanting to be harsh, but that was ugly tonight.

And how about TT's three point shooting .. do we have an Aaron Miles-like transformation here? TT needs to keep shooting that open three. Who would have thought that his three point shooting would be better than EJ's? Not me.

Lastly, Wesley .. I think Jaybate meant that he has shown he "can't guard the post", not "can guard the post." Bingo. KY does a better job there.

KY working into the rotation in Wesley's place is exactly what this team needed. We'll be better for it.

Now, shocking stat of the night (no, not TT's one turnover .. but does have to do with the number one). We blowout Howard. A team that Johnson County Community College would beat by 20. Heck, my rec team at Robinson might have given Howard a run for a half ... and Releford took one shot. One. Hold up your index finger .. that's it. One. And he drilled a beautiful three. I am baffled. He had multiple chances to drive and he just calmly reverses the ball, or pops it to the high post. He had shot opportunities. No thanks, would rather work the ball back to the top. Some folks are passive-aggressive. He's just passive. Love his D and everything else he brings. But come on.

Great to see the Fieldhouse packed for such a poor opponent, during Christmas break, on a Thursday night. Just an awesome place. I noticed something I didn't notice before in the exhibits up front in the Fieldhouse ... Sasha Kaun and Cole Aldrich had a wider wingspan than Wilt Chamberlain. Would never had guessed that.

    1. HawksWin (anonymous) replies

      Nice observations HEM.

  10. baldjedi (anonymous) says…

Let's call this game like it really was, a scrimmage, but that is fine. We have some tune up games before conference play. Next week against KState we need to have our A game. The good thing is we have had plenty of tests up to this point so we are battle tested going into conference play.

I am glad we are working on cleaning up our game, especially turnovers, but let's hope we can pick it up next week.

  11. JayHawkFanToo (anonymous) says…

Another "funny" stat is that not a single Howard player made more than 2 field goals. I am guessing that this has happened before but can't think of another game where it did.

  12. LAJayhawk (anonymous) says…

I mentioned at the time on the live blog (about 5 minutes into the second half) that Howard had the same amount of points as turnovers at that moment: 16.

Luckily they ended with more points.

    Barely.
