Five Kansas players scored in double figures — led by Markieff Morris' 14 points — as the KU men's basketball team defeated Emporia State in its final exhibition game Tuesday night at Allen Fieldhouse.
Thomas Robinson added 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Travis Releford (5-for-6 shooting) and Marcus Morris (4-for-8 shooting) also had 12 points apiece.
Tyshawn Taylor posted 10 points, six assists, three turnovers and two steals.
For the second straight game, KU was impressive from the free-throw line, making 35 of its 40 shots there (87.5 percent).
The Jayhawks made 26 of 52 shots (50 percent) while out-rebounding the Hornets, 40-25.
KU will open the regular season on Friday with a home game against Longwood.

How'd my boy Elijah do?
Funhawk 2 years, 6 months ago
Elijah did great! What a guy!
BP2U 2 years, 6 months ago
decent? nothing great that stands out .. I think he had a couple turns. was on my way to find the box score myself. I think he and Travis are both a little gun shy so far.....
T Rob had a great game though, which I was glad to see. He's key; double double and a few blocks. wonder how many fouls he ended up with, as that was a problem for him last year.
KU_FanSince75 2 years, 6 months ago
T-Rob did a nice job, too! I thought his footwork was much improved. Danny Manning had something to do with that. It was good to see Withey come into the game, too! The twins were a little down tonight but that's going to happen occasionally. Good luck Friday, Jayhawks!

Observations:
1] Royce needs to redshirt whether Selby comes or not. 2] We really need Selby...Tyshawn has improved...well some, anyway. 3] Kansas will lose at least three games this year when the Twins get in foul trouble. 4] Withey will be a non-factor until league play....if at all! 5] TRob is a Beast!!! 6] HCBS must have a "man crush" on Morningstar. 7] Tyrel may be our most consistent player and the unlikely team leader. 8] No way will Little handle any position on the front line. 9] Three point game [shooting and defense] abysmal...but this will improve [I hope} 10] For all of you out of range of Lawrence and JayhawkTV for the next five games, go to http://www.atdhe.net/ Great coverage with JTV, good sound and all the in house broadcast stuff!!

Yep.
Releford is going to play and do great this year.

One of the most disappointing things was Tyrel's getting burned on D for layups twice! Ugh. And not finishing a transition dunk, with the assist placed perfectly--where that vertical go? Brady disappointing x 2 games now...we ALL saw it!
With great sadness, "my man" Little had a poor outing. Slow feet on perimeter D. Outsized on interior game. He should focus on dedicated 3 game (Shooting, defending, creating his own shot/separation).
Releford needs to show us a 3pt shot. The whole team needs to show us some reliable 3pt shooting.
KULA 2 years, 6 months ago
I think Little will be ok if he just gets enough PT to develop and grow into the roll (of the 3 spot, not 4--he's not big enough). He made up for a couple of lapses with flat out hustle. And he makes himself a scoring threat--which Brady doesn't. Just don't set expectations too high for Mario. Remember, he was a JuCo and not a NCAA player for a reason.

@ Oak-----
Observations from your observations you just made----
1-- Agree
2---Agree----Tyshawn does better at the #2 guard spot.
3---Agree----But, I am thinking we will win at the Octagon of Doom, again!
4---Disagree---Sorry, but Withey has that defensive presence---yeah, I know, he is not a
5---Agree---T-Rob made some huge steps tonight.
6---Agree---what's up with playing Morningstar?
7---Agree---and, we need to see more of Tyrel's sister (in a respectful way).
8---Totally agree.
9---Agree (maybe not the three point shooting but the defense will improve, or,
10----Agree
11----totally off topic---the way my Chiefs played at Oakland, your Rams will beat the

Just finishing watching via DVR - had to teach tonight.
If we come out like we did tonight against real competition then we might lose as many as 10 games.
I loved Tyshawn's quickness. In fact, during one play with a weird camera angle, and how he was sweating and hugging a defender - he looked like RussRob.
On a different note: Tyrel is going to get some "white boy" jokes for that miss. AND I hope Marcus' balls are ok.

MJ had a 46in vertical...I think this "42in vertical" for Reed is a dubious proclamation. I'd like to know the source.
Nutflush21 2 years, 6 months ago
42" would be tops at last years NBA combine. so that number does seem to be inflated. Having said that, Reed is on a youtube video claiming 42" and he did throw down some sick dunks at late night...
ralster 2 years, 6 months ago
TT- a little tentative. But hey, this is exhibition. EJ- not yet had much chance to shine in transition. Royce- not much impact, but looks like tools are there+raw ability--needs PT if not redshirted. Brady- did nothing of note for 2nd game. Why does Self stay with him? Because he sure doesnt look like glue so far...nor did he the last half of last season. Not finishing that layup was a sour note. Dont try and sell me any more Brady hype. Tyrell Reed- couldnt finish at rim, where's the 42in vertical? Couldnt stay with Div2 player cutting to basket x 2 tonight--gave up 2 easy layups. Where's that quickness? Did hit 3s. (The main attribute you can count on). Releford- a better outing. Needs to finish 4foot jumper, but did nice things. Show us a 3pt shot... Little- Disappointing outing. Should only play wing, but saw him with slow feet defensively--got taken all the way to the rim by a Div2 player. No 3? No MJ moves? One pull-up 6ft J that he missed short. I hate to make excuses for Mario, but maybe he just needs more PT in his wing position (not as a 4...). Did see some aggression from Little (good thing). Selby- sadly M.I.A... TRob= beast. Double-double. This is the hustle-stuff we've heard about...I like it. Markieff- smooth, all around game. Just what we wanted/needed/almost-expected! Marcus- good outing. As expected. Withey- One day/Some day he may be healthy to run some plays & block some shots, get some boards? Let us pray...
Best thing about the game: 87% FT shooting (wow!), 5 guys in double figs (maybe expected vs. Div2 opponent). Need improvement: Team not cohesive enough to play pressure-D. Too many broken assignments leading to layups. And dare I mention 3pt defense? (cough, cough, Farokhmanesh, cough, ahem!)...

The "future" is n-o-w: EJ, Royce, Releford, (Selby). Tyrel Reed is a OAD whose only reliable threat is as a 3pt shooter. Brady is a OAD whose contributions are __. (u fill in, cuz I can't think of anything). What? Feed the post? How is anyone else going to get better at that if they dont get playing time?
Self has recruited a bucket-list of guards...but what good is a bucket list if you cant get thru it? Damn, how long we have to watch Brady play before we start to wonder if anyone can be a better player than him. Brady hasnt done crap since the TX game last year--or you can say thats all he's done?
This herky-jerky play we are seeing is simply a by-product of going with the most experience available last season to try and make a deep run last season--so no one else got experience. That's OK, as who knows what would have happened vs. Butler or Duke last season if TT/Sherron shot their avg 3% vs UNI? But now we will have some growing pains for several weeks...its natural. Brady needs to sit. Reed=situational 3pt sub...(that's all). Future is now. Move forward...
Selbyville 2 years, 6 months ago
Like your insight ralster. The best look for a Kansas team under Self is the brutal all-around game. We were too one-dimensional last season with Sherron, X and Cole on the floor. Reed is one-dimensional and Morningstar is zero-dimensional.
Our best shot is to reach the peak of the all-around attack, and I think we'll have trouble getting there with Reed and Brady.
KULA 2 years, 6 months ago
Amen on your Brady observation--I could have written that last year. In fact, I think I did. I know I did in response to another one of Jaybate's fantasies about Brady's "trey gun" and "lock down defense" the other day. Brady blew 3 fast break opportunities. Tyrel just doesn't have the quickness or foot speed. End to end speed is one thing (that's not that important in basketball) and quickness is another. And he's not a good shooter. A good shooter hits when he has to move, not just the spot up (same goes for Brady). Self needs to sit Brady and let Mario and Travis play into their rolls at the 3. Mario's not big enough to handle the 4.

What was with the announcer-Dave Anderson?-calling the players by the wrong names??? Elijah Johnson was Elijah Robinson. Tyrel was Taylor or Tyler or something.
ralster 2 years, 6 months ago
You mean Dave Armstrong?
waywardJay 2 years, 6 months ago
playign Selby and Tyrel at the 3 will eleviate this.
Tyrel's strong enough to handle MOST 3's he will face, and those who are too big willbe matchup Mario will draw. or Marcus after Withey's healthy.

Summary: Lets see where we are by late-December...Self has some work to do with this overall group.

Huge congratulations to Coach Self's magic translating into NBA success:
Utah Jazz, passionately led by one of Coach Self's premier guards he coached collegiately, Deron Williams, fought back from a 22 point deficit to beat Lebron James, Chris Bosh & Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat in Miami.
Nice job Coach Self!

Fire Gill! Fire Self! In fact, fire every coach at the university! And oh, how I forgot about all the Brady haters... I'm really considering just not coming to KUSports.com anymore. It seems like there's too many people who hate KU posting on here.
ralster 2 years, 6 months ago
If your're talking about my "Brady" comments, that's what I think watching the kid play since January...This is simply what Brady is showing us now. I was shocked and amazed the job Brady did in 08-09 when he started @ the wing after Mr. Rush left. I just want more now than Brady is showing us. Even compared to the better-than-good Brady of 08-09.
Now if u spoilin' for a fight, bring more "sarcasm" about Bill Self. As KU alumni, I am damn proud of the job Self has done! The '08 team play and ultimate achievement is the finest/fullest expression of SelfBall in all of Self's career--and we have been trying to duplicate that high, high level of play ever since. Self is a great coach and a very shrewd recruiter. Best coach in college BBall, hands down! RCJH.
