2003 season, week 3

Another strong week from Woodling, who went 10-1 for the second straight set of picks. As opposed to last week, when he got the KU game wrong, Woodling missed the marquee match-up of the week — Oklahoma vs. Alabama.

Despite losing to just four KUsports.com readers last week because of one loss, Woodling had a worse record than a whopping 42 readers this week. Aaron Starkey of Olathe was the Week 2 winner, choosing KU as a 38-20 victor. Dale Bourne of Olathe was also 12 points off the final score, but Starkey won thanks to being closer to the Jayhawks' final point total. Apparently no one thought the KU offense could erupt for 40+ points.

It must have been a pretty easy week to pick games correctly, as not only did 42 readers top Woodling, but 46 more tied him at 10-1. The KU game cost most people a chance at an undefeated record, but the Baylor-North Texas and Colorado-UCLA games also hurt a few readers.

Anyway, here are this week's picks. And click here to read Woodling's column.

Missouri 50, Eastern Illinois 3 — Tigers finally open at home where they can name score against Div. I-AA Panthers. EIU blanked Indiana last Saturday. That's the Indiana in Pennsylvania, not the one where Bob Knight once rampaged.

Kansas State 51, Massachusetts 3 — Wildcats prove they can win with Jeff Schwinn at quarterback against UMass, second straight Div. I-AA puff pastry on schedule.

Colorado 23, Washington State 6 — Buffs might go flat after back-to-back emotional wins over Colorado State and UCLA, but Cougars figure to be flatter after heart-breaking 29-26 overtime loss at Notre Dame.

Oklahoma 44, Fresno State 16 — Doggies from raisin country aren't too bad — they beat Oregon State last week — but Oklahoma is Oklahoma and Fresno State is Fresno State.

Baylor 9, SMU 8 — Stunned by Alabama-Birmingham and creamed by North Texas, Baylor is listed as a two-point favorite against the Ponies. What does that tell you about SMU?

Oklahoma State 49, Southwest Missouri State 10 — Hey, I thought SMS played Kansas every year. Oh well, it's about the same distance from Springfield to Stillwater as it is from Springfield to Lawrence, so what the heck?

Nebraska 20, Penn State 18 — No longer children of the corn, Huskers have turned Oklahoma State and Utah State into cornbread and, although Penn is a State of a different pone, NU will grind out a win in Lincoln.

Texas 33, Arkansas 11 — In reprise meeting of former Southwest Conference powerhouses, Longhorns' juggernaut will turn Razorbacks into pork rinds.

Iowa 25, Iowa State 22 — It's third straight home game for Cyclones and third time won't be a charm. By the way, ISU's remaining home games are against Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas State and Colorado. Gulp.

Kansas 27, Wyoming 23 — Battle of 2-10 teams in 2002 should go to Jayhawks who have better personnel and some momentum after Saturday's 46-24 stunner over UNLV, another second-division Mountain West Conference team.
