KU/USA wins gold in double-OT vs. Germany

Their legs look tired, at times things got sloppy, but in the end Team USA’s basketball players found just enough to outlast Germany and win the gold medal at the World University Games Monday in Gwangju, South Korea.

Kansas University won all eight of its games — in 10 days — at the international competition, capped by an 84-77, double-overtime victory in the championship.

Wayne Selden Jr., who looked worn down after carrying the U.S. throughout the games, made just six of his 28 shots, but led the team with 22 points. The junior KU guard launched the ball toward the rafters as time expired at the end of the 50-minute affair.

Frank Mason III had as much to do with the gutsy victory as anyone, taking over late and scoring the basket that forced double overtime. The junior point guard finished with 18 points and six assists.

Senior forward Perry Ellis made six of 21 shot attempts and added 19 points.

— Check back in for more throughout the day, as’s Bobby Nightengale Jr. and Mike Yoder report from South Korea.
