Fly or Drive?

Fly to Dallas and connect to Lubbock. There’s no way you can drive from Dallas to Lubbock. It’s too far. Lubbock also has a delightful airport that is small and easy to get to. Be prepared to board a small plane out of Dallas, though.

Stadium Info

Football Stadium: Jones AT&T Stadium
Capacity: 52,822
Basketball Arena: United Spirit Arena
Capacity: 15,020
Traditions: “Bangin’ Bertha” is a tradition in which “saddle tramps” carry “Bangin’ Bertha” — a bell on a trailer — to all home football games; “The Masked Rider” became an official school mascot in 1954, when Joe Kirk Fulton led the team out onto the field at the Gator Bowl dressed in a black cape. Today, The Masked Rider leads the team onto the field for all home games.

The KU Alumni Association will host an 11:30 a.m. tailgate alumni in Raider Village before the football game kicks off at 2:30 p.m. Entry is $15 for members and $20 for non-members. It will have its KU tent set up south of Jones AT&T Stadium. The cost includes a burrito buffet from Freebirds World Burrito, along with chips and salsa and soft drinks.

My only advice this year is not to visit the Lubbock county jail for the 2nd half of an overtime road win while trying to bail your buddy out and listening to the game on the radio through the speaker hole in the desk clerk's window after driving 14 hours to get there.

After we left the jail about midnight, there were literally tumbleweeds blowing across the street by the bail bondsmen's shop.

Don't forget the fact that Lubbock is dry. You can get a drink in a restaurant, but if you want to buy a 12 pack or a bottle of hooch, you have to go out to the strip. It looks like Vegas out there.

If flights dry up into Lubbock, you can also fly to Ammarillo and make the drive down.

The 50-Yard Line Steakhouse is a great place for a steak, though it's crowded on the weekends. There's also a bar off Broadway next to the Tech campus called Crickets. It's not a bad option.

Lubbock is no longer dry. There was a vote this spring, and beer sales have begun.

You can drive from Dallas, but it's a bout 6 hours. It's a beautiful drive though. From Lawrence, it will take you right at 10 hrs if you drive straight through. I know, because I go back to Lubbock every year for a game.

There are many wonderful places to eat in Lubbock. Cagle's for a good steak, Josie's for the best Mexican breakfast, One Guy From Italy for an amazing calzone.

Be sure and walk around campus. It's 2300 acres, and it's absolutely beautiful.

Any questions, post em here and I'll try to answer as best as I can.

One other thing I'd like to add... for those of you who go to the game, stay in the stands for halftime. We have one of the best and largest bands in the Big XII. The Goin' Band puts on a great show. Also, try and get to your seats by 15 minutes before kick. The pre-game at Tech is something to see. You'll want to watch the Masked Rider lead the team on the field, as well as the "tunnel run" from the Goin Band. It's a pretty impressive show.
