The Keegan Ratings: The legend of Mario

After each KU basketball game this season, this is where you can find out the hardwood equivalent of The Nielsen Ratings from Journal-World sports editor Tom Keegan. He'll rate the Jayhawk scholarship players' individual performances, telling you who was worth tuning in to watch. If you agree or maybe even differ, make sure to comment and tell Tom how you really feel. (Scoring: Each week, the top player in the ratings will be awarded 10 points. Second best gets nine points. Third best gets eight points, and so on and so on. The season standings are at the bottom)

1. Mario Chalmers: Biggest shot in school history. Rod Stewart said of it: “This will go down as one of the greatest shots in the history of the game.” Plus, Chalmers was 6-of-6 from the free throw line. The team made 14 of 15 free throws.

2. Sherron Collins: It was evident he had played against Derrick Rose in high school because it didn’t look as if Collins thought he was anything but just as good as Rose.

3. Darrell Arthur: Had 20 points and 10 rebounds and hit a huge hook shot.

4. Darnell Jackson: Came up clutch late in the game and finished with eight points and eight rebounds.

5. Brandon Rush: Had 12 pointss and six rebounds and made Chris Douglas-Roberts work hard for his 22 points.

6. Russell Robinson: Strong defensive effort. Made the only shot he took.

7. Sasha Kaun: Did an excellent job of jumping out to double team Rose in the first half.

8. Cole Aldrich: Speed of the game made this not as good a pace for him as the North Carolina game was.

The Keegan Ratings: Season Standings (based on average points)

1. Mario Chalmers 7.59 (296 points, 39 games)

2. Darnell Jackson 7.15 (286 points, 40 games)

3. Brandon Rush 6.95 (264 points, 38 games)

4. Darrell Arthur 6.50 (260 point, 40 games)

5. Russell Robinson 6.35 (254 points, 40 games)

6. Sherron Collins 5.94 (202 points, 34 games)

7. Sasha Kaun 5.53 (221 points, 40 games)

8. Cole Aldrich 3.88 (155 points, 40 games)

9. Rod Stewart 3.36 (111 points, 33 games)

10. Tyrel Reed 2.74 (63 points, 23 games)

Sherron was big at the end, but I think overall Arthur should be 2nd.

Sherons the kind of player that can look real good, and look real bad.

The last two games of the tourney, he looked real good for maybe 15 minutes. However, the other 30 he looked really bad!!

I'd place Rush and Arthur ahead of Collins. I'm sorry, but I can't praise him, especially after that ugly dribble drive he tried to force with less than a minute left. He nearly lost us the game.

Yes Collins made some mistakes but didn't you guys see in the final 2 minutes it was Collins who was screaming at his teammates to believe? The kid was a huge part of the fight that got that game tied up - not a stats thing... a heart thing that earns him the second spot!

WOOOOO! YOU'RE NATIONAL CHAMPS JHAWK NATION!

How about a starting backcourt tandem of Mario and Sherron next year? No doubt the best in the country... and playing with Mario full time should calm Sherron down and get him to stop making some of the dumb mistakes. And, oh yeah, they would both have to be early favorites for all of the player of the year honors for next year.

Sherron also gets credit for getting the pass to Mario to make "the shot."

Not only did Sherron make that pass to Mario as he was falling down, but he had the huge steal off the inbounds pass and then the three. He may have played out of control at times, but he came up clutch at the end.

Keegan is a D-bag. He's got a huge love for Sherron and although my doubts about sherron may make me a little blinded to the truth, Keegan definitely sees things a different way than the rest of us. Sherron did some great things and his mistakes were kept to a minimum (minus a turnover in the last two minutes and neglecting to jumpstop on his steal and layup in the last couple minutes. He had three guys on his tail, and he thought he could just go straight up for a layup with it? He got stuffed big time and should've known he would've. He doesn't think well in a game). Collins was a top 5 player, but there's no reason Arthur and Jackson should be ahead of Sherron. He's got speed, but that speed cost us a turnover at the end of the game, his bad decision making cost us a layup towards the end of the game, and his OUT OF CONTROL speed almost turned the ball over before Mario's legendary shot. If he would've tripped half a second earlier, we lose that game. Keegan will always pick the popular bench player as the hero (does it in football too) even when its clear decision making is a reason he's on the bench. Keegan doesn't get it. Get over your love of underdog guys. There's a reason Collins excites people (rightfully so!) and there's a reason he does not start . . . and you fail to ever mention the reason for the latter.

If Sherron doesn't make that steal at the end of regulation we don't come close to winning that game. No other player makes that play and then to hit the three. Huge play of the whole year to be honest. Great year to be a Hawk fan.

We may not have Mario next year if he decides to enter the NBA draft.

You all are crazy to question Collins at all. He makes an aggressive drive that doesn't pay and you all think he's out of control. You don't think Bill doesn't give him the green light on that all day? He tells him GO. I can't even believe these comments. Without Sherron, NO TITLE. People fold, their bodies give, and he didn't. That steal, that three, that push up the court to dish the assist to the greatest shot in KU history-------WHAT GAME WERE YOU WATCHING?

Mario called the "pass" from Sherron a fumble. He said at the press conference after the game that Sherron fumbled the ball but Mario managed to save it and get the shot off. I think Mario probably had the ringside seat on that one.
